Darvon and Darvocet pulled from US market.

What??? Noooo........this is the only pain med I can take that I don't have adverse reactions to! This is a real bummer :(

Hmmm well if they pull Darvocet off the shelves what else is available for me to ask for because I am severely allergic to codeine and anti-inflammatories interfere with my other health condition(s)?

Tramadol maybe??

Sherry this has been brewing for nearly a year now. My husband has been on Darvocet for 15 yrs and I first read about this back at the first of the year when they recommended it be taken off the market. I do hope your dr can come up with something else that will be effective.I know you have been battling this stuff a long time.

Straydog, I didn't know this. Thanks for letting me know. I don't take Darvocet unless I absolutely have to (6 pills can last me a year).

Medicalkid, I find that Darvocet works wonderfully for me. Of course, I try to avoid narcotic pain relievers as much as necessary (they interfere with my other health conditions) and I tend to have a weird system so maybe that is why my body likes it! :) I had morphine once before a medical procedure and boy did I feel good! :) But I know they don't usually prescribe that because it's highly addicting. I have an appt with my doc in a about a month so I will ask what other alternative there is.

Sherry, I'm in the same boat with my crohn's colitis and not being able to take ibuprofen. I've been on darvocet for several years now and without it, I would have a difficult time moving around due to joint pain. My doc has mentioned before that we would try morphine if the darvocet didn't help me enough. I really didn't like the idea of that but now I wonder if that is going to be my only option. I quickly scheduled an appointment to see her next Wednesday.

Seriously having concerns over my quality of life because of this. Anyone here take morphine for chronic pain? I don't want to feel like I'm on drugs or not be able to drive or think clearly.

I took morphine for about a year or year and a half at a dose of 15mg every 6 hours as needed. I averaged out over the course of a month taking around 80-85 pills.

For me the morphine worked fast and lasted quite a long time even though it was immediate release, and unless I was having a really bad day i usually could get by on 2 for the day.

I never did feel high on it, but that is just me. I have a very high tolerance to the "buzz" effects of narcotics, nor did it make me feel dopey and tired.

Sadly the one problem I did end up having on it, after about a year of taking it, was that I developed memory problems, which is somewhat of a rare side effect from what I have been told, but known to happen. Within a few months of being off of it my memory improved and now a year or so later it is pretty much back to normal.

I am currently taking dilaudid for pain. Started out at 2mg 3x day which did nothing, went to 4mg and it helped until I went through something that aggravated the hell out of my back and am now on 6 mg 3x day. It is working fairly well, enough that I am able to cope with the remaining pain and get things done that need doing.

Does anyone have an opinion about loracet? I take it only went I can't move cause of the pain. The doctor gave me 500mg twice a day perscription when the spasms get really bad. It helps me some, but it doesn't totally stop the pain, just makes me able to move.

Hi...new to the forums. I am a Crohn's patient diagnosed in 98. I have been able to minimize my medications to 100mg of Imuran and a daily dosage of darvocet for the last 5 or 6 years. I have taken the darvocet for pain manangement for probaly 10 years with at least 6 of those years at a daily dose. I am so upset by the recall of the darvocet and don't know what I am going to do. My list of allergies includes morphine. The morphine actually causes my intestines to stiffen up like a steal pipe and causes worse pain for me so my alternatives to darvocet are minimal. My GI doc has always been leary of prescribing vicodin or loratab due to the constipation factor. I had to contact the doctor on call on Saturday because I was refused my prescription of darvocet when I went to pick it up on Saturday. The on call doctor called in Tramadol with acetiminophen but this does not seem to be helping as well as the darvocet did. Does anyone else living with chronic pain due to Crohn's disease have any other suggestions for daily pain management of joint and abdominal pain?? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have a call in for my regular GI doctor so hopefully I hear from them very soon.

It has been banned for ages in Europe. There are many, many people who may be affected by it being taken off the market, especially allergy sufferers. However it has caused serious heart rhythm problems in some people which the FDA has finally recognized. Has anyone here been affected? If you have, I would advise first talking to your doctor and then if it is serious, perhaps consulting a lawyer. There will almost certainly be a large class action following this.
