Oxycodone 30mg HCL versus Oxycodone 30mg IMM REL

I have been taking oxycodone 30mg for approx. 2 years. I normally get this filled at Walgreens & they have been giving me Oxycodone 30mg IMM REL tablets. This month I went to a different pharmacy because of some issues with my normal one. They gave me Oxycodone 30mg HCL tablets. They are not working in my body as well as the IMM REL. Can someone tell me if these 2 meds are EXACTLY the same thing or not? Thank you so much for your help!

Welcome to the CP forum!

I know for a fact that the 30mg IMM REL are IMMediate RELease, but what the difference is, Im not sure. I will look it up and see if I can learn more.
Hopefully one of our members will know, and share the information with us here.

The HCL is an abbreviation for hydrochloride (HCL), and is also immediate release, with no Tylenol in it.

It is probably the smartest thing to do and simply call your pharmacist and ask them. They should know...and I'm at a loss here on this one.

To the best of my knowledge they are the same medicine, they are just labeled differently.

It is very possible though that while the active ingredients are the same, and essentially the same medication, the pharmacies are getting their supplies from different manufacturers and the "fillers" are different.

It is not the first time we have had people on here talk about how their meds work differently when they got a different "brand".

As suggested already, your best bet is to talk to a pharmacist and ask about it. I suggest contacting the pharmacist at both your normal pharmacy as well as the one you recently went to and have them tell you the details of the medications they gave you. One of the other things I am thinking is that you may also be running into the "anti-abuse" measures some of the medicines have been getting recently.

Since it's a generic the two products could be, although they're not supposed to be, somewhat different because of being made by different manufacturers. Read the label of the old one if you have it and the new one. It's often abbreviated, so you might have to take the bottle to the pharmacist.

Sometimes the difference is only the "inactive" ingredients. That's the fillers, starches and stuff to hold the pills together. That's where I usually get into trouble. For instance, I can take Tylenol tablets but not gel caps, Benadryl tablets, but not liquid.

This is the first time that I have been involved in a "chat" of any kind. I have been on pain management for 5 years. OsteoArthritis, Degenerative Disc disease, Sciatica, and bulging discs. I have had 15 surgeries including spinal fusions, joint replacements, etc. I am only 51 yrs. I have taken Oxycodone 30 mg & Oxycodone HCL 30 mg. My Pharmacist says they are the same but for fillers and/or manufacturers. I find more often than not that the differing in effects is personal by individual and you have to pay more attention to the manufacturer than anything. good luck, be well!

Oxycodone HCL and IMM REL are the same drug however, one may be manufactured by a different company. For instance, some people dislike the Mallinkrodt generic, while they prefer Actavis. It's the mnfr. That makes the diff. Not the HCL or IMM REL. . . . Q
