My husband got me a beagle puppy about a month ago. I don't normally like small dogs but I've fallen in love with this little goof ball. There is only one problem, she(Bella) is killing me. I will admit at first I wasn't real happy with Kenny for bringing me a "small gift" we didn't talk about. But now that I've spent time house training her and obedience training, and just loving on her, and walks to the park and playing with her and fetch we've become really close. But like I said, she's killing me. I couldn't figure out why my back has been hurting so bad lately until Mitch took complete care of Bella for two days. It's all the extra bending to the floor. I bend at the knees, I couldn't get to the floor any other way. Right now Mitch and Paige can help until Kenny gets home but what will happen when school starts in the fall? My back will never be strong enough to handle bending over all the time but Bella is part of our family now.

I can feel for you Kat! Dealing with a puppy with a bad back is very hard. Hubby recently bought a lab puppy and since I am the only one home during the day, of course I am the one that gets to take care of him. Plus I decided to get me a new puppy and she will be here the 19th of August, so now I will have two to deal with.

That said, I have found on the days that I am not feeling like walking the pup (soon pups) that I need to keep the puppy occupied since he is so used to going on walks every morning and now has started whining if I don't go on our walk for the morning....it sucks! But there are ways to deal with it too. I bring toys into the picture that can sometimes keep him busy.

I have also taken to sending him outside when he starts to whine. That seems to help a bit. It's just something that we have to do when our hubby's decide to be a pain in the butt!!! LOL

I can't really, after reading what I wrote, give you any good advice here. I just deal with the puppy as best as I can and am overjoyed when hubby comes home and takes over.

Except for cleaning up any "gifts" the pup might leave you there are certainly things you can do to minimize bending over as much.

If you are having to fill her water bowl a few times a day think about getting an automatic watering bowl.

If you don't already you might want to think about feeding her dry dog food and getting an automatic feeder. You don't have to load them up on food if you are worried she will make herself sick by overeating but because they are tall you don't have to bend over very far to pour her food into the top of it.

You could teach her to jump up on a chair or bench when it is time to go for walks so you don't have to bend over to leash her up. You could also put out some kind of tie out and make it so she can come inside with it on and get up onto her special chair to be hooked/unhooked. Then have a hook just outside the door to hang the chain/cord on when not in use so all you have to do when it is time to let her out is open the door and reach out for it.

I would also suggest using a harness instead of a collar,if you don't already, especially if you go to letting her out alone on a chain. Harnesses are very hard to dogs to pull out of, plus they are a lot easier to hook and leash or chain to.

I also have my toy poodle jump up on the couch arm to put the leash on. Once she sees the leash she heads right for the couch. This is a perfect waist height so no bendind. She can also do a pretty high jump to my arms, but if your beagle is anything like ours, she is not a super active dog. We have 5 dogs, ranging from 4-83 pounds. 2 pitbulls, beagle, scottish terrier and the toy poodle, its a bit of a zoo.

I agree with Jim1969, harness's for everyone so they dont slip out. I could never chase a dog at this point,lol.

I can also use my reacher to pick up and put down her food bowl when i need too. Hubby takes care of food and water for the most part so I dont need to worry about it usually.

So sorry all you dog and cat lovers, out there, give me a baby any day.  They eventually walk, talk, and use the bathroom. lol.

My daughter has a dog she got when Roxi was 8 weeks, she is a Yorkshire Terrier, and although I never would have spent that kind of money for one, I love her and could not imagine life without her.  My daughter goes to work each day, and then it just her and I. laying around watching TV.  She lets me know when the urge hits her, we get along just great.

So now that I cant imagine life without her and she has me wrapped around her paw, who would have thought it, not me.

I can sympathize. Back in April I adopted this cute little dog from the local Animal Shelter. He was listed on their website as a Boxer mix. I figured since Boxers usually grow to only eighty pounds at the most, it would be no problem taking him for walks. But after I had signed the papers and paid the money for the adoption, I was then told he was also half Rotweiller. When I got him he weighed only eighteen pounds. Now only a few montsh later, he's up to 57. And he's not even six months old yet. His vet said take his weight at five months and triple it and that would give me a good idea of how much he'll weigh when full grown. That means he could very well end up 140 pounds or more. He's already strong as a bull and it kills my back every time we go for a walk. If taking your dog for a walk is increasing your back pain, I'd suggest a harness instead of a regular leash. That decreases the pulling they can do and makes it easier for you to control them.

What are you having to bend over to do for the dog, by the way? I'm just wondering if there are other ways you can accomplish whatever it is that won't require as much bending.
