Hi there! New Here. 10 years ago I was T-boned by and 18wheeler. I was in my little miata with the top down. Got thrown from car and rolled down highway. Compound fracture on L tibia and fibia right below my knee. My elbow was shattered and nerves and muscle dead in bicep. Hairline fracture on both hips . The list goes on. about 6yrs ago my knees and lower back started really affecting me and asprin just was cutting it anymore. So my PCP prescribed me pain meds and muscle relaxer and has helped alot.



I just moved to the memphis area and I can't find a PCP who will take me on as patient after I describe what previous PCP treated and prescribed. Keep getting refered to pain mngmnt. I just don't feel like that's what I need. Plus it's an extra 20 copay and I have heard they are really strict. I have all my records and documents. I know there are Dr's out there willing to help and would be helpful just don't know how to go about finding them. Anybody have any suggestions??

To be blunt I would not expect to find any primary care physician to take over prescribing your pain meds since you are entering in as a new patient to their practice. There are simply too many drug seekers out there and any doctor worth anything and who even remotely cares about his patients are going to be extra careful. Because of the issue with prescription drug abuse the DEA is taking a lot harder look at how and what doctors are prescribing pain meds, and the federal government has released new guidelines and regulations, with more on the way, about training, record keeping, etc.

Besides that, you really would be better off seeing a pain management specialist. They are usually more up to date on medications, treatment protocols, etc than your average family doctor. Just make sure the one you go see is one that does prescribe medication and not one that only does procedures.

Like it or not this is the system today and your only two real choices are to play along or sit out.

While you are at it though, it would be a good idea to find yourself a primary care doctor and start building a relationship. A good PCP can help you with working within the system and will be there for you in case something happens to any of the specialists you may end up dealing with.

Hello Brock, I really have not got much to add since Jim nailed it. The only thing I will add is there are new rules and guide lines for drs to go by that are prescribing narcotics. Because of these new guide lines PCP's say they want no part of it because it takes up too much of their time just geing thru the red tape.

I am afraid its like Jim says, either go to pain mgt or go without. We can thank all of the druggies out there for the new guide lines & such.

The best case scenario now with a PCP rxing pain meds is 10 days and thats it. I do hope you can find a good PCP and consider seeing a PM dr as he could probably really help you in the pain dept.

Hello Brock, nini53/kathy here, and I agree with both Jim and Straydog.  You will be much better off with a pain management doctor, its there speciality.  So make sure you have all your paperwork, mri's, ct scans, whatever.  If you have all the paperwork and get and good pm doctor, its worth the extra 20 bucks, believe me, and if you dont believe me, ask almost everyone on this forum.
