I am in the midst of a massive Crohns flare currently and can't seem to find any relief. My GI tells me that I already have a script of maintenance percocets to curb the pain. Problem is that it's only 2 pills a day. Taking 2 at a time is barely touching the pain. The only relieve I can get is if I go to the ER. Just got my remicade so all I would need is an elevated dose or something stronger for a few days but he won't hear it. Been to the ER twice in the past two days just for pain relief. Sucks that I have to go back and forth for four hours of relief and a $100 copay. Some times I think he doesn't believe me. Ugh, really frustrating!!

Should i just bite the bullet and try to get admitted?  Would hate to have a 3 day hospital stay just because i'm in pain.  I know i don't have an small bowel obstruction, ive had a few and know what they feel like.  This is just a really bad flare.

Have you tried talking with your primary care physician?

Sean I also suffer with crohns and understand what you are saying. But, my GI is just like yours does not rx anything to really help with the pain. Go into and see your PCP and if he can't help you out, then ask him to refer you to a PM dr who can help manage your pain when its not real bad or when it gets the way it is now. Thats horrible getting hit with the high co-pay at ER but when you need something you need it. From what I hear most GI run about the same when it comes to pain meds.

Thanks Jim and Straydog, unfortunately my PCP and GI take the same approach. Solve with the least amount of pain meds to do the job. Obviously it is what i want them to do but when my pain gets uncontrollable i wish they could help me out. Have had bad luck with two different PM docs. All they wanted to do what stick me with needles.

Fortunately i did go back to the ER early this morning and the doc gave me enough oxycodone to keep my comfortable. Thankfully she gave me enough to last a few days, until the crohns meds kick in. My 3rd visit will hopefully be my last. :)

If your pcp and gi doctors won't help, and if you don't need a referral, look for a pain management doctor,
it would be a lot better than having to go to the ER...there's simply no excuse about what your
current doctors are doing to you...Sure hope you can get some relief soon...many many well

i have crohns as well. i had to see a pain doc bc my GI refused to do anything even though the pain was so bad i'd be puking on the can. i've been on perc for over a year now- ok for the pain but leading to another problem- dependence...no win...good luck- look for a pain mgmt clinic and get in there.

Update. So I am going to my 2nd pain mgmt appt on Thursday to a local hospital. Got a referral from my pcp. 1st pain mgmt place only wanted to give me nerve blockers. Didn't do it because they had never tried it on a Crohns patient and the upkeep would be too time consuming and painful. I'm really nervous about this appt, I'm just hoping the doc can help me out. Tired of being in pain and getting belittled by my gastro. I understand his stance but there is no need to treat me like a degenerate. I hope there is relief on the horizon.

SeanM....I am sorry you are suffering, oh how I remember the ER visits just for pain medication to get me through a few hours with less pain. I think it is great that you are going to a pain management doc...this helped me out agreat deal. My pain management doc wound up giving me breakthrough meds for the flare ups. This ha really helped me. Hope it all works out for you and please keep us posted.
