someone dear to me is nearly suicidal from suffering with chronic nerve damage effecting her entire spine . her injuries and pain don't seen consistent with the accident that preceded it . her nuerologists are considering a scs . to me this seems like a radical step but above all i need her to want to survive . i just want her to make an informed decision . if u are able to share your experiences with me i would truly appreciate it ..

Hi Starsunshine and welcome to Healing Well's chronic pain forum. Your friend is lucky to have you as a friend. I am sorry to hear that your friend is suffering so, nerve pain is one of the very worst types of pain to have because most narcotic pain medications have little affect on it. There are some medications out there such as Cymbalta, Neurotin and Lyrica that many drs try the patient on that have nerve pain. It is one of those things medications may work for one person but the next so there is no guarantee they will work.

I am not sure what you mean by her injuries & pain do not seem consistent with the accident, however, if the neurologist thinks this may be an avenue to try I am sure the dr would not make such a decision blindly. Also your friend would undergo a trial for the SCS unit before it would be permanently implanted. Depending on the outcome of the trial, that will be the deciding factor on whether this person is a good candidate or not.

By chance do you also have chronic pain? It is very difficult for most people to understand what it is like to live with such horrible pain. In some cases yes it can rob a person of nearly their life. Its not something I would wish on anyone. It would be great if the SCS unit works for your friend and helps reduce his/her pain level.

I suggest that you use our search feature here at the forum and you will also be access quite abit of info and not have to wait for someone to come along and post that has a unit. The search is located at the top on the right. Type in SCS unit and you will have some reading to do as these units have been discussed here before, several times.

It's great that your trying to help a friend, but ask her if she would
go and seek out counseling, or strongly recommend it and also tell her about
the suicide hotline is there should she need to use it, sounds like she really
needs help with counseling first, maybe have her speak to her local church
pastor/priest...I'm very truly sorry your friend is going thru all this, one
of the hardest things to deal with is chronic pain as it cannot be seen...
Also, we do have past postings on SCS here, you can go and look thru those
and read up on SCS, also google them...many well wishes and prayers for you and your friend...

Hi Starsunshine, and welcomed here. I'm glad that your friend has you by her side, and so very sorry for her pain. Nerve pain, like Straydog said, is often the worst pain to have.

As far as SCS goes, they can be very helpful. Mine is for leg pain rather than back pain, and is far from perfect, but I wouldn't part from it. I could write a novel on my experiences with it, but if you've got any questions please just ask.
