the article bashes any opioid painkillers and companies that make them. their opinion is dangerous.

SS, I don't disagree with you, however there is information there, that will be of interest to many Chronic Pain members.

The pure hydrocodone pill as I read it would avoid liver problems linked to high doses of acetaminophen. This will be welcome news to many.

I posted it, for just that reason, and none other.

Interesting reading SE, thanks for posting. We don't have hydrocodone available in Australia I don't think, either with acetaminophen or without. There are more mild ones - codeine/paracetamol (as it's called here) and dextropropoxyphene/paracetamol - but I don't think I don't think I've ever seen strong opiates in combination. Certainly all the IR oxycodone is pure oxycodone. The reason for combining them is that there is a synergistic effect between paracetamol and opiate drugs - theoretically giving better pain relief than if the opiate is taken alone - but I think it should be a choice, especially for chronic pain patients. And obviously it may be a serious health issue for some as well.

I know that when I have severe BT pain I will take paracetamol tablets with my oxy IR, but it's not something I'd want to be forced to do every time I needed to take IR meds.

I wanted to post one more article..that made the local news yesterday. This was big news around here…and especially so because of the Dr she was supporting. This same Dr was convicted of killing 33 or so of his patients….and his wife was also convicted.
My Dr personally Knew this Dr that was convicted….and all I will say is that he said the conviction was correct….and many, if not all of the Dr around here felt the same way.
Anyway!…I thought I would put this out there…..I thought it was an odd story….in that we had an advocate out there working for us….but she was supporting part of the problem across this country. (Dangerous Pill Mill Dr's)
Kind of like shooting ones self in the foot!

i think this med has been a long time coming and it would be nice if they could produce a immediate release version for breakthrough pain. it bothers me that the article also stated hydrocodone is not available without APAP but in fact you can get compounds from a compounding pharmacist above 15mg alone, it just rises to C2 instead of C3 and you never hear of anyone getting that. the newer generic OPANA IR is a little more like the new Oxycontin formulation harder to abuse, they could make a hydrocodone IR like that.

Tampering and diversion are always concerns, but that doesn't mean we don't need effective drugs for chronic pain.

As a total side note, can I mention it has always bothered me on the show "House" that he is addicted to Vicodin? Vicodin ONLY comes in a fixed dose combo of 5 mg hydrocodone, 500 mg APAP. That means you could take 8 a day before you started frying your liver. No doctor would choose Vicodin as their drug of choice. *shakes head*
