Could be a lot of things. It could be your mattress, it could be the position you are sleeping in, it could be due to some kind of medical issue, etc.
I usually have a lot of lower back pain at night. Sometimes it wakes me up, sometimes it waits until I wake up to make itself known.
My problem is 2 fold. One is a medical issue, having several spine issues, and the other is how I like to sleep. I am a back and side sleeper. When I am on my back it puts pressure on my low back from the mattress and when I am on my side I don't have any support for my back. What has helped me is to get 2 pillows. One is a rolled pillow that I will put under my knees when I am on my back and in between my knees when I am on my side. The other is a large body pillow that I kind of roll back into a bit when I am on my side to give me just a little bit of support.
It is rare for me to wake up with very little or no back pain but it is also rare for me to wake up with the intense pain too. It took some time to learn how to manage those pillows "in my sleep" but any more they are usually where they are suppose to be depending on which position I wake up in and I rarely have any memory of moving them during the night.
One other thing. When I go to bed I make sure the bottom sheet is tight and smooth on the bed. Even a small wrinkle in my sheet will up the pain levels.
