Hi everyone! I have a question. I've chronic hip pain and had some xrays done and the results were 'normal'. Well, they hurt, so I don't think they're normal! Should I have an MRI done? Do xrays miss things?

Hi Potsie, I saw your post and I thought I'd tell you what I know because I have hip pain due to bursitis. An x-ray may not show everything. An MRI can show the doctor much more, like tears, spurs, hairline fractures, bleeding, etc. However - before getting that far, the doctor usually physically examines the hip to see if there are areas of pain, if the skin is red or inflammed, etc. In my case, bursitis limits my range of motion of my hip and that's what the doctor picked up on. I couldn't rotate my left leg without pain but my right one was ok. If you didn't have a fall or an accident, if you have a particular area that hurts when you press on it in the hip joint area, if you have some pain going upstairs or other movements, then it might be bursitis but your doctor needs to examine you. (Hard to believe that the doctor wouldn't do anything more for you since the x-ray is normal. Bursitis might not show up there.) I hope you find out what's going on.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear of your pain...
An x-ray is to look at the bones primarily..So it's good news that you don't have any hip fractures or something like that!
Yes, an MRI would be the next step to see if there is any tendon/ligament/muscle issues....
It could easily be bursitis...Did the Dr. mention that at all? Does he have you on any anti-inflammatory medication or tell you to ice the area or offer Physical Therapy?
Do you do any daily exercise with walking or light weights? Or are you mostly inactive?
Does it hurt most through the night and first thing in the morning? Or more after walking?
Not that I, or anyone on here is a Dr. of course....Just asking a few questions to better understand when this started...
The main thing is ruling out anything emergent...but you don't say that you had any type of fall or accident....so it's more likely it's something muscular with inflammation as this is very common...

I have company right now so I can't talk right now. I'll be back later tonight. Thanks for the feedback!

Ok, I'm sorry I didn't get back last night. I have pain from the waist to the my buttocks on my left one. Right in the middle. I can push on it and feel pain. If I walk a lot, it really hurts. On my right one, I hurt from the groin(where my groin and thigh connects to my torso) and the pain radiates down my thigh. Also when I walk awhile. My hips also ache constantly, whether I'm sitting or standing or walking. I don't think my doctor doesn't believe I hurt that much. She's young, and I just want to tell her, wait until you're older!! I've got an appt to a spine clinic in April.
