Hello, I am beginning tests to see what is happening to me and what I thought was  a special mri, is something called a mylogram, and I am not sure thats the correct spelling as I cant read the dr rx.  I have had blood taken prior to the procedure as thats what the hospital calls it.  I have to make sure I have a ride home as I will have dye in an iv but more important, I will be in I believe is called twlight, whatever its like a sedative which does not make me mad.know in 2010 I was 5'6, my entire adult life i have been 5'9.  When I saw my gp to draw tons of blood, I am now 5'5.  In 2 years I have lost another inch.  I am guessing I will have some major surgery before I am 4' .

So if anyone has had what I think is called a mylogram, could you let me know what its for?

Kathy, the dr must think something is going in your back with the nerves I am guessing. The myelogram was the gold standard drs used prior to the MRI. One thing it shows is how the nerve root sleeves fill, MRI does not, in fact the MRI does not show much of the nerves like the myelogram will. My neurosurgeon explained it to me like this, its like a road map of the spine, shows much more than an MRI, much more definitive.

Once you are released to go home,m go home & rest laying down and drinks lots of fluid to flush the dye. No babysitting that day, Yes, you will need a driver. If he called it twlight, yes its sedation. Its really hard to say some people say they are uncomfortable, others say they did fine. My daughters friend went shopping afterwards which she should not have, you are suppose to rest.

Don't feel bad about losing some height, I lost two inches because of osteoporosis in my spine. Take care & when is your test....Susie

I had a myleogram 3 weeks ago. It was fine - and I was really not aware of the needle in my spine. The guy who did it told me before he did anything. I had a cervical myleogram. The reason is because I am having a lumbar laminectomy and double fusion this Friday. I had neck surgery w/fusion 3 years ago. My equilibrium and balance is off which is usually a sign of neck nerves. It turned out my neck myelo showed no signs of any dysfunction. Doctor wanted to make sure my neck was okay before he operates on my back the 22nd.

A mild headache followed but only for a few days. After the procedure you do have to lay flat a certain number of hours to prevent major headaches.

I had no problems with my cervical myelogram. Good luck to you.

The big concern with a myelogram is what is called a spinal headache. That comes about if there is a leakage of spinal fluid after they inject the dye into the spinal canal. You will most probably have to lay flat for at least 4 hours after the myelogram is done in the hospital then they will discharge you directly home. Go home and make sure that you completely understand the post myelogram instructions and you follow them exactly so that you can avoid the headache .
Mine said to keep my head elevated no more than 30degrees ( no more than 2 semi flattened pillows), only up to eat and go to the bathroom, and stay down in bed for 24 hours after the test. I was also told to drink lots of coke, tea or caffeinated coffee- all of which help to avoid the spinal headache.......
