Hello,
 I turn to you after consulting with several orthopedic, including foot experts.
My wife was hurt in a car accident six months ago, along with three of my four children, as she crossed the street with them. At first, the doctors opinion was that she probably suffer from a fraction at the 'Ossa metatarsalia', but the radiography did not show anything obvious. After several months of constant pain while full functioning, under the physicians's guidance, one orthopedic sent her to do radiography while standing up. The results indicated clearly that this is a lisfranc ligament injury.
   
 At this point opinion was divided regarding surgery. Some thought we should operate and others warned us because of the complexity and sensitivity in that area.
Meanwhile, the continuing pain is very strong and almost unbearable. We need to decide which way to go. Today's guidance is a focused physiotherapy without surgery. My questions at this point: Are we facing irreversible damage? What can we do in order to stop the unbearable pain? painkillers do not help. and finally- what are the consequences regarding surgery?

Hi Benny and welcome to the Chronic Pain forum. My deepest sympathies to your wife and children on their accident - and your wife on her injury and continuing pain.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with her type of injury - beyond the quick Google search I've just done - but maybe one of our other members will know something and be able to offer some thoughts, though of course none of us here are doctors and can't give any medical advice. Your wife would be most welcome to join us here as well if she's in need of support. You won't find a friendlier, more caring group of people anywhere on the 'net.

Hoping you can get the information you're after.

       I agree with Laura on this..as we just cannot answer your questions on the injury and the recovery period.

   What pain med's has your wife tried up to date? There are a lot of med's to try these days, and I'm wondering just how far her Dr went with these.

Hi Benny and welcome to the forum. I am very sorry to read about what happened with your wife and children. I am assuming the children are all ok now.

I did the same as Laura with the google search and found several web sites and read about her condition. Everything I read pointed at having to correct the problem and there was two different surgeries discussed. Not having surgery did not appear to be an option. It also said this is a hard condition to diagnose and is often overlooked. Catching it on a weight bearing xray is how it was dx'd for many.

What does the current orthopedic say about whether to have surgery or not? What does he say will possibly happen if surgery is not done.

I wanted to welcome you to our cp forum. Glad you found us but sorry to hear about your wife's problems and of the accident. I hope your children are ok.
I am not familiar with her diagnoses but i am sure others will be along to help you out. Perhaps tell us what she has tried so far for relief. How long ago did this happen?

Hope you will keep posting with us and perhaps ask your wife to come join us as well.

Hi Benny Welcome to our chronic pain forum. I'm so sorry that your wife and children were in the accident. Are your children ok now?

I can sympathize with your wife. I fractured a bone in my foot and my ankle a few years ago. It was very painful.

I looked your wife's injury up and I have to say, if it were me, I would have the surgery. That's just me. You and your wife have to make that decision.
