1week until SCS surgery

Hi all-

Well I finally got everything squared away and will have the SCS surgery on 9/11. I got an interesting surprise when the case manager called me today. The VA has a contract with the Super 8 hotel and have booked my wife and I a room there for the night before. They didn't want us to travel there on Monday and have to travel back on Tuesday morning since I have to be there at 5am. Wasn't expecting that.

It is nice to have pleasant surprises, doesn't happen often in health care.

Hope the surgery goes well - is this the full surgery or the trial? I he it goes well for you. I wish it was more commonly available in the UK. There are huge waiting lists here and my pain doctor would hardly even discuss it with me. Same goes for pain pumps. When I asked him about that, I as told he only uses it in palliative care patients!!

Hope all goes well, keep us posted.

Yes this is the full surgery. I did the trial the beginning of June. I opted for the RF ablation first, but that didn't work.

Will be praying for great results and for everything to go as planned for the surgery. That is wonderful to be able to stay close by and not have the long drive so close together...

       Good morning Bill!

            It won't be long now! Like everyone else here, I hope you do well and have success with this device. Recovery time can take a good while, so be patient. From what a couple of other members have explained the paddles have to have pently of time to scar in, before you may see optimum results.

      ...sounds like the VA is doing you good deal, and treating both you and your wife well....we don't hear of that too often here.

      Make sure you remind us the day before, and we look forward to supporting you with thoughts and prayers...and through your recovery as well.

Good luck with your surgery Bill. That is great that the VA is offering that to you and your wife. Servicemen deserve those extras for everything you have done!!

I am 8 weeks post op from my SCS with paddle leads and my dr couldnt be happier with how I am doing. I wish I was moving better, but am reassured I am doing better than expected. Mine was done outpatient, in at 6AM out by 2 or so. I walked out the door with just a super bad backache. He did lots of locals for the post surgicalpain. That lasted till the next morning and bamn, lots of pain! Fairly close to my fusion pain. I was cleared for no restrictions just this past week, just taking it slow.

Feel free to ask any questions about the SCS, I am a newbie to the device but learning every day!

Thanks for the information. The case manager did say I would stay over night, but still be considered an outpatient. She said he likes to do this to make sure the pain is managed well before you head home. I like this because of the almost 2 hour drive we have.

Hi all-

Well my SCS surgery has been cancelled for now. I went to the VA this morning for last minute pre-op stuff for tomorrow's surgery and my white count is at 17.6 with no symptoms. Since they can't figure out why it's so high the decision was to cancel and redo blood test on the 21st and see if it has gone down.
Just to risky for an infect at the spinal cord with my white count so high. What's even worse is I feel great except for the rib pain.

WOW Bill!….I suppose it's better safe than sorry later. Be sure and let us know whats up with the high white count when they find the reason.

I am very glad my surgeon is looking out for me. With all the problems I had last year getting the esophagus tear to heal I surely don't want any complications with the SCS surgery.

For some reason my sed rate and white count have been going way up and then come back down, but never to what they consider "normal" though. No one has been able figure it out so far. I will post what they come up with.

Sounds like you are in good hands. I hope they figure out what's going on with the white blood count.

Hi all-

Just an update,

Well my WBC came down on it's own, but it seems I have some other blood issues. I have to go see a hematologist/oncologist. I started having blood blister like areas show up when I barely bump or rub up against something on my arms and I have started to bruise very easily. Also the rashes I had right after the Gulf War has returned again. So I guess I'll see what te new doctor has to say.

Oh wow, so very sorry all this is happening to you. Sure hope it's not serious, so I'll be saying some prayers for you, and please
keep us posted when you can, as we do truly care...Hopefully things will clear up for you so the SCS can be put in...
Which one is your doctor going to do the Medrontics or Boston Scientific?
