Hurricane

Hi All,

I just want to wish the best to all our HW members who live in the path of Hurricane Sandy (or, as the news around here is calling it "Frankenstorm")! Stay safe everyone!

I live north of where the storm is supposed to make direct landfall, but we will still get hit, and we will be on the side of the stronger winds. We are expected to have severe wind damage across the state, and historic flooding near the shoreline. Hopefully it is not as bad as the news is making it seem. Everyone here is particularly freaked out because of last year's hurricane and freak October Nor'easter (from which the state is still cleaning up). There was no gas to be found today in my tiny town, and many of the stations in one of the larger neighboring towns were out too! Regardless, I expect that we'll be without power for several days.

I live just outside of DC in Northern VA. We are going to get many of the bands of rain and high winds but looks like the center will be a bit north of us.

After the Derecho freak wind storm that caused so many issues for us with cleanup and power outtage for 5 days. As well as the Hurricane Irene last year...we are pretty well set with supplies and a great group of friends and neighbors all willing to help one another.

I just pray for my mom as she has heart issues and can get great anxiety about branches breaking or trees falling. Our neighbor just pain to have one of our pine trees (85 foot) topped off to make it much less dangerous. It was stressing them each storm even though it's a healthy tree...But since they decided to pay because we just dont' have the money....I did all the work of calling and interviewing the companies, making sure they were trully licensed and insured, and get a good, fair, price. It was nerve wracking watching them climb up so high and tie up branches and large trunk pieces lowering them back down without hitting our home which is only 3 feet next to the tree. But especially not the gas meter and all our cable box!

So, hopefully they will feel safer tonight and the next days of wind and rain!

I hope that everyone is set up with supplies and all set to go snuggled in bed:)

We are in Western New York, and are supposed to get heavy rains, and 55-65 MPH winds. I just hope and pray that everything will be ok here. We usually don't get anything like this, so I'm a bit nervous about it. Jerome went and got a gallon of water, and we have some canned food. I also have a weather radio with a flashlight on it. It's the windup kind.

Ipray that everyone will be ok.

So far so good here. We should get hit in a few days.

Sandy is gonna hit hard and possibly be a cat 2 level hurricane, I've been following it since last Thursday, Everyone needs to heed those warnings and get prepared, it's the dirty side of these storms that has the most damages, batten down. This storm is gonna hit hard and my Prayers do go out to everyone.
The best thing those of us out of its path can do is to donate water to the red cross, these folks are going to need water, then food, so donate to the American Red Cross.

My heart goes out to everyone in Sandy's pathway. I am safe but those that are not should heed the advise of those who have been through hurricanes. Great advise given here, water is a necessity, so are our medications get them filled while you can.
We have had a couple of storms here this summer so had all of our trees topped and trimmed to avoid future issues. I am one of the fortunate my hubby was able to do the trees so saved us thousands.

I survived thru hurricane Ike, these people will need water so donate to the American Red Cross. And prayers to them.

 

     

I hope our members that live in harms way of this storm are safe. What a horrible mess, and I think it will take a very long time to get help to those people.

   Please keep them in our thoughts and prayers as they work their way through this mess.

We made it thru unharmed, but I've been looking at pictures and listening to reports here online, and it's just horrible in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York City, and Long Island. These people really need our prayers. So far there are 15 dead in New York, and three in New Jersey.

Everyone in those areas really need our prayers.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this storm. Living in Ms we have been through a few and it is not fun! My husband is a lineman and he headed to Pennsylvania on Saturday to help restore power. In August we had hurricane Issac. He worked 16 hour days restoring power only to come to our home that did not have power. But that is just how it goes. Sandy seems to be a major nightmare for them!!

all thinks considered, sounds like you made it through Sandy pretty well. Some of the pictures coming out of Jersey and NYC are horrific.

the year after we moved from NH to SC, we got a direct hit by Hurricane Hugo (1989). We were living 60 miles inland at the time, and still got hit with 130 mph winds. It destroyed 40% of the houses in our county alone. we were fortunate, lived in a big, all brick historic house. other than losing shingles ( the roof needed replacing anyway), not even a window pane broke. we had 4 large trees all go down, unfortunately, all of them hitting our neighbor's houses. didn't make us real popular at the time.

the miracle was, all 3 of our kids, much younger then, of course, slept through the worse of the storm all night in the hallway of the house. they never woke up until morning. when they went outside, my oldest, 14 at the time, said it looked like an atomic bomb had gone off.

Great to hear that you are OK, you have been in my thoughts the last few days. I was concerned for you and your mom (not to mention doggy!!). I am pleased you sustained little damage. The pictures we are seeing here are horrendous. Some areas look like war zones. Just delighted you are OK.
