Hi Scottman, I can relate to sports injuries, I played American football for several years. Landing on my left shoulder in a game is what started my roller coaster of shoulder problems. Now 15 years later, almost to the month, I just found out that the humeral head is collapsing, most likely because of avascular necrosis.
Personally, I'd say you have 2 options. 1, hot-and-cold therapy; 20 minutes of ice, five minute break, ten minutes of heat, half hour break, and repeat, then ibuprofen as directed by the label. Might help, might not.
Option 2, probably your best long-term option, go see a doctor as soon as possible. You say it "lifted" your shoulder, almost sounds like you described a dislocation, or possibly a break in the collar bone. Either of which should have immediate medical attention, especially since a possible break that isn't set right can be a life threatening condition. I'd say, if you have an emergency room that can check you out with an X-ray, and make shure that you're safe to play, that is your best bet, they might also be able to prescribe something that would help with the pain, obviously you don't want any strong pain medications before a game, but there are some good options that you can't get at the store without a prescription.
Good luck with this, and good luck with your game.
