correct. with the sedation medication in twilite sedation you get a mild amnesic so you don't remember the procedure. in past gerd and colonoscopy procedures i had it done that way. i also had it done that way in a vocal cord implant in the OR. i had to able to say my eee's so they could check placement of the implant, but remember none of it.

I questioned the dr cause I wanted the twlight meds. Little guy had already been through a number of texts using versed or propofol(spelling?). He had little side-effects and woke up quickly and smiling. I figured why use the general if he could stay still with the other meds? Dr stated that with infants and toddlers they would often go the general route.

Like I said, I was surprised. I guess most parents don't have this problem occur. We were ruling out a brain tumor.

I guess I'll still stand by it being "extremely unusual" for an adult to have general anesthesia for a MRI....how about that:)

Snowbunny21....Why are you so worried about this MRI thing? I have been put under for many types of surgeries and things. never had any problems. I understand there are serious risks that could happen.
However at my pre-admission visit with the anestiaoligist, we did discuss it very well and although her and the docs are not supportive of it, they did agree. My addmission forms do state that sedation will be offered first and GA is "ok'd".
I will let you all know how the MRI went. Thank you for being supportive while Im so far from home and just need that understanding hand! ;))

Reallly...???? did you have to remind me about the wonderful flight? When I came over here I had a full script of percocet. But that was a year ago so wont be having any for the return :(((

HA --i would like to know the name of that hosiptal. Been to Riyadh for treatment too. Your friend would not have been given any script for morphine from anywhere! He would have been admitted to that hospital and given a dose if that was case. And Im sure he HAD to be admitted for each dose then released. That treatment def didnt last for very long!

BTW what type of credentials do you have in all this?

 

Pink, just a suggestion for your trip home, try to get an overnight layover somewhere, and break your flight up. I have a good friend that contracts in the middle east and has to fly back and forth 2Xs per year. He always does an overnight layover somewhere, and says that not only does it save him $, it also makes the flight a lot less intense on his back.

It is actually very safe and common to use GA for an mri. I see it done all the time at MD Anderson. Of course this is all done in a hospital setting but it is safe and done all the time with children.

There are risk with everything with being put to sleep, but to say its very risky is not true at all. And I have had the best doctors in the world tell me this so that's where I get my info. I have never been put to sleep for an MRI but my three year old son will be and I was told it was very common and safe. I wouldn't do it anywhere other than a hospital setting tho.

ETA- I posted this not to debate but to make sure the OP is not even more terrified now to get her MRI done. Just always use common sense and i would probably only do it in a hospital setting or one close to it.
Snowbunny talked about the "twilight" type drugs and those are safe as well and will knock you out to where you don't remember anything.

I just had a 1.5 hour long MRI last Wednesday. Slept thru the entire thing. They are kinda relaxing for me haha.

My son will have an MRI done just like the other posters son on here and he will also wake up in recovery. These may be children but it can be done with adults also.

Snowbunny is one of my most favorite people here. I just love her. But yes I have always been told that GA is very common and safe for MRI's. They do it all the time in hospitals. We all have different opinions here and that's ok. I just don't want you to be all scared now. SB is a great person to get advice from on here so I am definatly not trying to debate. Just wanted you to know what I have been told from the top cancer hospital in the USA.

Ok now we can drop this subject I always hate disagreeing with anybody haha. I sure hope everything works out for you. I use to take Tramadol a long time ago. I don't remember if it ever helped me. I am on fentanyl now.

I truly was just very curious about the general anesthesia for an adult as I had never heard of that before done in the US...So that is how it got to be a big discussion and off tangent...

Even you and I were saying in other posts how strange it is for them to do the GA in SA but not give you an pain medication at that seems backwards....and very frustrating for you:(

I am certainly not a medical professional....I am just someone who has been in pain management for 11 years and I'm actually friends with my PM who is an Anesthesiologist so we have spent hours and hours talking about things as I love to learn...

As I wrote in a post above...I learned that it is used for children here quite often.!

We all have to make choices for our own health care and I wasn't trying to say that your choice for getting GA was wrong at all...It was more that I didn't think any Drs. would do that for an adult so it made me wonder if anyone else had this done or heard of being done in the US....

Sooo, its Tuesday morning here and tomorrow morning I will be admitted for my MRI. aaahhhhh
Should be home in the evening and really really really hoping not to feel so sick from that contrast junk.
I just dont know yet how Im gonna deal with back and neck pain I will have from laying on that horrible horrible long, dark, narrow eerrie sounding tunnel for such a long time... ;(((

Anyways Im have a problem today with my neck, cant turn my head to the left and moving or lifting certain ways/things sets off alot of pain but great timing I guess so they can get a small idea of what I go through often. It just switches side in the should blade pain but its always affects turning my head to the left for some reason.
Anyhow wish me luck.....
