NYT article, may be of interest to anyone in NYC

Hi all,

I was browsing the NY Times this evening, and came across this article. It basically says that in NYC, public hospitals are cutting back on the amount of pain meds that they will prescribe a patient upon discharge from the ER. Just thought it might be of some interest to anyone living in that area.

Interesting, Skeye... thanks for posting.

I can see both sides to this issue.... but still don't like all of these legislative "controls" on what a doctor can/can't prescribe.

One of the doctors in that article said - "“It prevents me from being a professional and using my judgment.”

Ultimately - I think it should be left up to the doctors to use their discernment re: the person, the diagnosis and so forth.

I agree Tina. The government hasn't went to medical school all those years to be able to tell what us patients need and don't need.

It was one of the first things they did here in Florida so old news here. I agree with everyone else,just how far are we going to allow the gov to go in controlling medical care? Many of the legit Drs are livid,they spent a great deal of money to go to school and time to learn and then folks on boards and in commissions can and do take over treatment of patients from them,so to speak.

One DR here in Florida asked was it a matter of time before a committee meets and determines your old and debilitated 'Mother' has become a liability to the medicaid funds an serves no useful purpose anylonger so lets eliminate her? Will they make decisions on a preemies treatments based on monetary cost or quality of life?

Is this so far fetched? No,because they are making rules and regulations and enacting laws now and not considering our quality of life in the least.
