Robaxin IV

Has anyone ever received IV administration of Robaxin?  I started at a new pain doctor a few months ago and she wants to try Robaxin IV.  From what she says, it's supposed to last a few months, sometimes up to six months.  I have to pay over $100 out of pocket to get this medication, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Robaxin being given IV.  Robaxin orally did nothing for my muscle spasms, so I'm kind of leary about it.

Nope...never heard of it in IV form either. I would be asking a LOT of questions in that with taking the regular oral med, you have to be concerned with doing any driving or anything that could be dangerous (cooking and leaving the stove on, etc). With the IV, it's going to be about 50 times stronger and the possible side effects could be pronounced.

Have you taken the oral med before and find that it works pretty well for you? I would think any Dr. would have you go through that "trial" first to see that it is effective at ll before jumping to the IV.

Same thing with the cost...if this is going to be a hardship to you then I would be asking for things that your insurance covers.

Just my thoughts...I happen to rotate my muscle relaxers every 2-3 years and Robaxin works very well for me but I personally like to have more control over my medications daily in that I can take "up to" the full amount or less on the better days. I guess if I was admitted to the hospital for something severe muscularly I would be ok with the IV form as I would be monitored that way.

I have taken Robaxin orally, but it didn't do anything. Of course, I have had gastric bypass, so a lot of medications don't seem to absorb and work like they do with someone else. The only muscle relaxer I have found to work and allow me to actually get some sleep is Valium, but of course nobody will prescribe that to me.

I, too, have never heard of Robaxin IV...

For me - Robaxin was like taking water. I've been on all the muscle relaxers - and they all work, though some w/ side effects.... but the robaxin didn't do it for me either. Of course, we are all different.... but just wanted to share my experience.

Re: valium.... while sometimes doctors prescribe it to be use it like a muscle relaxer... it's actually a benzodiazepine... and most doctors won't prescribe it that way, as it's mostly used to treat anxiety, etc. But, I agree - it does work well for pain/sleep when I've taken it too....

Hi Star as with any med being given IV you want to research and study study and study! Cant say that enough.

With oral meds if you have a problem with the med itself the most you have to deal with those problems is about 8-12 hours and then they are out of your system and you dont have to take anymore right? With anything given IV or even IM it takes much longer for that med to move along and especially IV it is in your blood and any untoward effects are going to be ten-fold and last longer with no way of getting the meds out of your system you just have to let it wear off.

I have not heard of anyone being given the robax IV either,doesnt mean its not as I have been out of nursing for 12 years so even though I try to keep up its not possible of course.Thats alot of money as well for a med thats been around that long and is relatively cheap in the oral form and especially not knowing if its going to do any good or not.

Just do your math so to speak and find whatever you can find out about it being given this way,the great thing about the internet but remember it is just like ppl it has differing opinions too!

Star, I do hope this works for you that would be wonderful. I know you said Robaxin did not help in oral form, however, it may work very well when given in an IV. I get horrible results on Morphine orally, but give it to me in an IV and it works. It all goes back to how our bodies metabolize medications in general.

Your hubby made a good point about the $100 and a very true one indeed, lol. If it works then it will be worth its weight in gold for you........Susie
