Neuro or ortho?

Since it has been decided my pain and loss of function is due to SI joint dysfunction.. what specialty would that fall under? I am not dealing with the PM clinic for this any longer and my PCP usually asks who I want to see specialist wise.

It's a joint, so I think ortho, but there is nerve impingment so I think neuro. Or is there another option I am forgetting?

It looks like to treat that particular issue it could be either one. You can certainly contact a Board Certified Neurosurgeon and ask if they treat this issue and if they do, I would personally choose them.

I was also looking online that a MRI is really not the best tool in which to determine if there is SI joint dysfunction. There is an imaging test SPECT/CT that is much more reliable. The regular gold "standard" confirmation is under flouroscopy or CT guidance.

I think I had asked you before which actual type of Dr. is the one who diagnosed you?

I think you would be best finding someone who has a lot of experience with this and have them make sure it's what is going on and then proceed from there.

Hi Tired, well since you say there is nerve involvment I would have to go with a neurosurgeon,at least get a consult with one and just sort of take it from there and see what he thinks the treatment should be. If surgery is recommended then I would get a 2nd opinion and maybe a third just to make sure I was getting the same dx from all the drs. I would also inquire about the xray Snowbunny spoke about in her post to you.

During my many attempts to get help for back issues, I have seen both ortho and NS. Each had a very different opinion of my problem. Both made logical arguments, but neither agreed with the other. In the end, I decided that anything that involves my spinal cord or my nerves was going to be handled by the neurosurgeon. It was a matter of considering what he does everyday for a living and considering that he works on the brain and the spinal column on a routine basis. That was the deciding factor for me. It also has to be said that I would check out both doctors as well as humanly possible befor I made the appointment. Once you get started with one, it's complicated to swap around.
