back pain is getting worse

My back pain is getting worse. I finally got insurance and have an appt with an orthopedic surgeon on Friday. Hope he can help me. I can't function due to severe pain.

Sorry to read that your back pain is getting worse. I sure hope the dr can do something for you. Have you had any MRI's or anything like that? It just stinks when we don't feel like doing anything because we are hurting so bad.

Can I ask why an ortho and not neuro? There is a huge difference in the two and an even biggger difference in their approach to pain and treatment methods. I cant recall your previous posts so I will go back and read to see if you have posted all of your problems and get a look at where your at up til this point,maybe back with more.

Glad you got some insurance as that alone makes a big difference!

Hi ksd9807, I'm so glad to hear you have insurance and I hope your surgeon appointment goes well. Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain though. Good luck and I will say a prayer for you.

I had tests done in 2008. Which showed herniated discs, bulging disc , spinal stenosis, ddd and arthritis. It is getting progressively worse. I haven't had much luck with neuro surgeons they just tell me to do pt which dont work. when I had insurance prior I seen an orthopedic surgeon. He was the one that helped me with my pain and explained what was going on with my back. I dont have much faith in neurosurgeons.

They are out there and some of the Board certified ones are the best in their league,make sure your not mixing up neurologist versus neurosurgeons and keep looking for one that is willing to go the mile with you. It really is in your best interest when your spinal nerves are involved. Ortho Drs are great for what they specialize in,bones,but in all honesty I wouldnt want them taking care of my spinal issues. I have a great ortho Dr that did all 6 of my knee surgeries and my steroid injections in my knee when it warrants so not a problem with them just like him to treat what he does best and leave the spinal nerve issues to the neuro.

Also Ortho drs are not known for prescribing long term opiates as they should not be needed by their patients for long term use and they generally turn those patients over to PM at some point.

Thanks Vickie. I know the othro I seen over 3 yrs ago treated my pain for 2 years with opiates. I know this orthro im seeing on friday is a board certified pain management specialist. I will let everyone know what happens at my appt.

If the Ortho you're seeing is a pain management specialist, then hopefully he/she will be able to give you a script for something, even if it's just short term to help lessen the pain while other treatment options are explored. Good luck! Definitely keep us posted.
