Oxycontin price question

Howdie All,

Last year, I remember paying around $150 for a month's worth of oxycontin... until my prescription benefits kicked in.

This year, I'm paying just $35. I use a high deductible insurance plan and get no prescription benefits until I meet the 1500 deductible.

Last month, I thought it might have been a mistake (maybe they put me in the wrong plan). But that's not the case and again today I paid just $35 for 60 10mg pills.

Have they gone generic again?

Not in the US....I think they are available again in generic only in Canada.

Sometimes prices and insurance plans change. No idea why. I had that happen to me, not with Oxycotin, but with other drugs as well as office visits.

Yeah, no generic on the oxy..... not sure why it was cheaper. I know my pharmacy changed this year to using the "reformulated" oxycontin... maybe that could be why it was cheaper? I don't know.

I also use an "oxycontin" card that we got somewhere..... It says Oxycontin Prescription Savings Card, through Purdue Pharmacy. Basically - it makes my $50 co-pay on it go down to $25.

I use Oxycontin for my long acting med, I'm using the 40mg dosage.

I have a humana prescription plan through Medicare...according to my monthly statement:

The "prescription cost with plan" is $423.61.

That's for a 30 day supply; so 60 pills.

Luckily, in addition to the plan, I also get "extra help" from Medicare because my monthly income is so low. Otherwise I would never be able to afford just this med, let alone all my others too!

Lexi I also have Humana as my part D and I have extracare as well.I just would never make it if I had to pay the Medicare premiums.

That was the reason way back 12yrs ago I went with the methadone versus the oxycontin I was on,it was very expensive and my SSD had not been approved yet.

It was hundreds versus $25?

Never switched completely to anything else after I got Medicare.

Glad at least most states offer the extra help now.

I wouldnt make it either. When I got my summary for the year....the cost of all my meds for 2012 was $3,046.71. So thats what I would have had to pay without insurance. That's literally half of my yearly SSD income.

Mine too. I had to switch from AARP after their group made a gap period when you reached a certain amount you had to pay out of pocket for meds. The lyrica was pushing me into the gap. I just switched to Humana about a year ago and have the Humana gold Medicare advantage plan. Limited drs on the plan but all mine take it but the co-pay for meds is even cheaper and the extracare pays the $17 premium for me.
It's bad when your monthly income was what your weekly take home pay use to be.

The snap program here in Fl is way lower then my hometown so I have to make up that difference some months using food pantries. Your not in this struggle alone. Some months I get so tired of scrimping and knowing my 15 yr old does too that I do without a few of my other meds and we just go out to eat or to a movie.

My other kids help when they can buying her clothes so she doesn't have to deal with peer pressure. They make sure of that. For Xmas she got tons of clothes an iPhone and a kindle which I'm on usually. Lol!

I hate that they have to do things for her I should be able to do. They never complain as she doesn't.

Well not meaning to get off topic but anytime an expensive med comes that far down in price it gives folks like me more options.

Looks like unless something changes that Oxycontin will be available as a generic again this year (2013) in the USA. I have seen predictions of availability from April to Sept.

Purdue, who makes Oxycontin, has been trying to get their exclusive rights to manufacture this med extended but have been unsuccessful.

Anyway, one thing I would do is look at your bottle carefully. What does it say it the big and/or bold type. Oxycontin or Oxycodone. If it says the latter then you are getting the generic.

It is oxycontin, with the "OP" & "10" imprint.

I really don't know why the price is so low. My pharmacy screws up a lot, so maybe this time it is in my favor?

Since I paid full price for my tramadol, I presume it isn't my insurance coding.

It occurred to me that maybe my insurance has a "compassion" provision now, and they discount from the first dollar certain medications. However, I would have read about that in the updates for 2013. So, I just don't know why I'm paying so little... saving, for now, >$100 per month.

I have never taken Oxycontin but I was just approved for my Disability and got Medicare... they also gave me the extra help with my Part D.. I only pay $2.65 for any generic and $6.60 for brands... I have no deductable and pay $0 for my medicare... My summary for my meds is about $17000.00 a year... yes that's Seventeen Thousand Dollars a year!!!! I also have Diabetes and take a lot of meds for other reasons... I have no idea how Medicare works... I have no idea why they pay my premiums but I am so grateful. I was on Medicaid in Tennesse (TennCare) and was about to be kicked out when I got Medicare... I was so worried about how I was gonna pay for everything and on the verge of a Breakdown... That's a LOT of money that I had no way of getting it. Another thing that is Fabulous is that I have no Prior Authorizations or Quantity Limits so I can get just about anything filled... That's very different for me..not having to jump through hoops to get scripts filled. Now I just have to get my PM Dr. to finally give me a Long Acting Pain Med.. I hope he will now that he doesn't have to jump through hoops either.

Jim,

Oxycontin and Oxycodone are different. Oxycontin is the extended release version of Oxycodone. So if you're supposed to be getting Oxycontin and your bottle says Oxycodone....its not the generic...its a different med. Lol.

When OxyContin was available in generic, the bottle would definitely read Oxycodone ER (extended release)....I was on this for years.

Just like I am on the generic version of MSContin (brand name) and my bottle reads Morphine Sulfate extended release...

So it's all about what comes after the Oxycodone...But it looks like Cog is on the brand name as there isn't a generic in the US yet again.

The loss of generic is what made me switch to the ER Morphine as it's cheap!!!:)

The Morphine ER didnt work for me. That's why I'm really thankful to have the insurance plan and extra help from Medicare.

He didnt say Oxycodone ER, he said Oxycodone, just differentiating. I know it used to be Oxycodone ER, just like the immediate release Oxycodone is Oxycodone IR.

I'm not fond of how there isnt much difference in the labels, I think it makes for easier mistakes.

Currently I pay around $12 a month for my OxyContin (currently taking 50-60mg/day), but the full price is something in the realm of $100/month.

Interesting to note that for you guys it's manufactured under the Purdue label...here it's manufactured under the Mundipharma label, the same with Oxynorm (is that a med you have in the US? ... just straight oxycodone IR, at 10mg or higher dose...)

Oxycontin is not morphine.

Morphine runs under the name brand of MS Contin. (One of them anyway)

Easy to confuse.

Jim...don't think anyone was saying it was...I was making a comparison about how the generics of OxyContin and MSContin are written on the bottle:) Nothing to do about them being the same medication...
