I have been posting in the hepatitis forums for the past few months. Hoping to get some advice on pain management.
Here is my story:
I have been working with my general physician because I have a herniated disc in my T2-T3 and a annular tear in my T1-T2 which occurred while squating at the gym. I use to do the injections every 3 to 6 months, they helped some. Unfortunately though, due to some liver health issues I can no longer have injections. I have done everything asked of me, I recently lost 90lbs to help with my back pain. It has not helped to date.
She switched me from vicodin to regular oxycodone HCL, whatever is without tylenol. Anyways, we discussed that it is obviously habit forming. She usually gives me 30 to 60 5mg pills and said to take as needed. I usually only need a prescription a month as I can make that many last. I am not sure what is typical for these, but I usually take 3 a day when in pain. I take 1 in the morning and 2 later in the afternoon, say like 5pm after work. That is when my pain is at its worse. When I do take the 1 pill in the morning it makes it so I can get moving and breathe without pain. In the afternoon I have to take 2. My doctor told me to take 1 to 2 caplets at a time.
Anyways, I called to talk to her about my pain management. It has been 3.5 weeks since I got a prescription. I ran out of meds about 10 days ago. I stretched it out as long as possible, but the pain has been much higher than normal. She informed me that 3 was to much per day. I do not take them everyday, sometimes I can go a week or so without taking them. I have gone the last 10 days without anything except 1 325mg tablet of tylenol every 6 hours. The pain has been really bad, but I did not want to call or go to my doctor. I do ice, heat, stretch. I slowed down on working out.
I finally called today because my wife told me to call or to sleep in the basement. She said when I am this much pain I get kind of grumpy and it is hard to sleep in bed with me because I toss and turn.
When I called today, I told the nurse I was open to physical therapy, which I always have been open to doing, just not at the place where she originally wanted me to go because it is over an hour drive there. I am in the middle of a surgery evaluation process so I am going to alot of consults and having blood tests done so they know when I level out so they can go in and remove a cyst on my bile duct. I asked the nurse to tell her that after the surgery I would have more time and I could go to this speciality place. I have even mentioned my willingness to go to a Pain Management Clinic, but I need her referral due to my insurance.
I do not want to change physicians, she has been great up until this last month. I do not think I am asking for to much, but maybe I am. I just want to be able to get through the day at work and with my wife and daughter without constant excruciating pain.
Anyways, I was hoping to get some input from people. I know your pain issues are probably much worse than what I deal with, I just am looking for some input on how others doctors handle patients.
