I happened to see this tonight on ABC News, and thought I would share the link!

Michael very good subject. All hospitals that run as non-profit and accept federation funding have money set aside for the patient assistance fund.
As stated in the article it's suppose to be displayed throughout the hospital. I notice it probably more so after working in them for so many years. I know what it looks like and how they "hide" the info.
In almost every hospital emergency room at or near the intake desk or triage there will be that sign that says we do not refuse to treat anyone regardless of their ability to pay. Now some go on to say even if that means stabilizing to redirect you to a community or teaching facility.
Basically means they are accredited in a non-profit status and refusing to not treat you and make available the funds in that program can cost them their accreditation.
Now how many people out there has seen the sign that qualifies for it being posted, and took it to mean they have money from their profit that can't stay in the profit margin as well as money from federal programs for patient assistance to those who can't pay and have no insurance

Vickie!…I agree, and wanted to post this, as we see members all the time who are without insurance. The news also said even if you have insurance to ask for it as well.
Just trying to help the troops here!

If the facility is a public one, you have to be seen and treated, its the law. But to what extent you are treated, that's a different matter.

Exactly David, the little loop hole that says we may stabilize and transfer you elsewhere covers that.
If a trauma patient with no insurance rolls thru the door and they know this could be months in ICU and aggressive treatment, they will opt to transfer to a university hospital or teaching hospital and matters not how far from home.
They want to not have to use a huge chunk of the money outta the fund.
Is it right or ethical? Probably not but they look at it as helping more being the better choice.
