I am 26, look about 20ish and i have a handicapped park permit. I have received some of the nastiest looks sneers and one woman yelling at me through her car window.....i know it is partly because of my age but also, that people cannot see my Chronic Pain...it is very frustrating , I am sure alooooooooooot of people have advice on how to deal with rude people in parking lots, i just need a little encouragement as to this..

Hi BunnyG and yes this happens alot. If people cant see your handicap or the reason for it they dont believe its there.

I have found that to be confrontational with someone that already has an attitude doesnt work so I always break out the biggest smile I can do a little sign language and pint to my ears and wave at them. They shut up when they think you cant hear me.

Well, after reading Vickie's reply, I really like her idea. I think her idea is priceless and if someone were to ever pull that stunt on me I would use Vickie's plan of action. Think about it, this is the last thing they will be expecting from you. I would love to be a fly on the wall, lol.

Thanks Susie and I have found it to be most successful!! They are just left looking like the idiot that they are. They know to continue their silly tirade is just well a waste of their breathe, LOL

Then by smiling and waving like they are an old friend they get the message that I didnt "hear" a word of their silliness and rudeness and that when I respond by some form of sign language that they cant understand? The look on their faces is priceless.

Try it sometime it works about anywhere and in any situation where they are being obnoxious.

Use one of the five fingers on your hand, and with the other hold up you handicap permit.

the truth is, you can't argue with idiots. they take you down to their level and beat you to death with experience. seriously, learn to ignore certain people. when people act stupid, look right thru them as if they don't exist and never, ever respond to them in any way. it's their problem, not yours, and by not recognizing that they even exist you leave it with them.

Not to take away from the seriousness of this subject (Bunny - I've had a permit since I was in my mid-30's for my heart issues and pain issues)....

Sign Language is pretty easy to learn I also know a few signs and most of the alphabet, but since deaf people have a sign for everything they are terrible at spelling, but they need to know the alphabet for peoples names...Once I was on a long train ride from Chicago and there was a deaf person on the train and we could talk some and it was an interesting trip...never know whom we'll meet in life....

Recently, I had someone come at me in a parking lot screaming, they proceeded to follow me into the store. I waited right inside the doors by the customer service and told them that I will gladly wait there for them to call 911, then we can ALL speak to the police about the accusations, check my driver license, placard ID and placard numbers. The gentleman turned right around and walked out the store.

I respect anyones choice to call police or report to the store suspected misuse of a handicapped permit. It happens all the time and makes me very angry. I will gladly provide my credentials to store management and law officials if someone questions my use. I understand that people may doubt a person without a visual handicap. What I dont respect is the people that take it into their own hands and verbally attack or intimidate, those people I just smile at and walk in the other direction. I wont bring myself to their level.

In a way it is a good thing that there are people out there who want to protect those handicap spaces so that people who are entitled to them can use them. It is sad though that many go about it in the wrong way.

It is ever sadder though that the need to protect those spaces even exist. Abuses happen all the time and not just by those who do not have placards or plates. I see it all the time around here by people who are in legitimate possession of a handicap permit. They have the permit due to someone else but will park in the handicap space either when the handicap person is not with them or when only the able bodied person is going to enter the store.

Either they have missed the "fine print" that comes with the placard that says the only legal use of that item is when the person it was issued for is present and when that person is going to be going inside. Either that or they just don't care.
