BIG storms coming! PREPARE

The bad storms and tornado threats are already in the Midwest even in Chicago and many cities in OH and moving eastward....

They are warning that it is going to build and coincide with a warm front from the south so there is potential for a Derecho which is this long wall of a storm that has incredibly high winds and rains.

This is what caused so much widespread damage and more than week of power outages for many in the Washington, DC and Metro area last year.

I'm writing to have people prepare NOW. Check when your medications are due and make sure you have enough for the next days, talk to your Dr. and get them early if needed. Get food, water, and supplies NOW! After that last storm I bought tons of supplies for my mom, doggy and self and keep in the garage so I don't have to scramble.

I also went ahead and booked a hotel room in a place we got to stay last year that takes dogs. We called at 5am after that awful storm and hours later every hotel in the entire area was booked solid..So...we were so grateful and lucky to have A/C and a place to stay for 6 days. Difficult to afford but no other choice as the temps were over 100 at that time!

So this is why I went ahead and booked now as I can easily cancel tomorrow night if needed with no charge.

I'm hoping it isn't as bad as they say it might be but want everyone to prepare the best they can and stay safe!

Although im way too far South to get any of this one my family back home in Ky are preparing for the worst.

As SB said be ready and don't wait to see then the things you need will be gone. Make sure you get plenty of water and batteries. Food you don't need to cook. And all your meds and keep close at hand in case you have to get out quick.

Great idea SnowBunny21, always try and get prepared storms can take a hard toll and make sure to have plenty of water!
Many prayers and well wishes to everyone in these storms and remember to take cover if you hear the alarms!

I hope everyone is safe... Even up here in Michigan we have flash flood warnings and thunderstorm warnings till morning.

thanks for the warning, SB. even here in western SC, the early warnings are up as this cold front passes us tomorrow afternoon and evening. was told to expect quarter sized hail and potential for thunderstorms with 70 mph winds possible. hoping not. its only june 12th, and we have already had more than 5 extra inches of rain this month than is normal. been the wettest spring in the 20 years I have lived here, glad the lakes are full, but enough is enough.

Thanks SB for the post. We were affected by last years storms too, however, we lucked out and only lost power for 2 1/2 days. I think we're prepared for any potential storm that may come our way.

We purchased two portable generators this winter. When Sandy went thru we stocked up on water and MRE's. Those are dehydrated meals that are served to the military when in combat. They have like 3,000 calories in them, just what I need. Guess I'll only eat once a day. We also have a gas grill to cook with once the weather clears and he can be out cooking.

Our generators will run our frig, freezer, Verizon cable, Internet, phone for us. The smaller generator will run my life saving equipment so that I can sleep. Worse case we also bought an inverter which plugs into my jeep and my equipment can be run on that so i could sleep.

My only real worry is my daughter is in NYC working as a resident assistant/teaching assistant at a university up there. The Mom in me wishes she were here at the moment. Or, I there with her, no her here she's on the 9th floor. I wouldn't be able to get back up to the suite if the elevators weren't working.

I hope and pray that any of our CP'ers that live in the path of these storms will be prepared. I pray that you are all safe and have no serious problems. Please keep us updated on how your weather is doing in your area. Be sure to watch and listen durning the storms.

Oops...didn't log off last night...LOL..

The first part of the storms fizzled out a bit right before it hit our area (outside DC) but is really strong from Baltimore, Philly, and north.

The other batches coming through later on today they are saying are supposed to be the worst with potential tornados and strong winds.

We have the car packed up with things to head out if/when needed. It's really all about my mom's stress levels as the older she gets the more anxious she has become about things unfortunately. (She is 71) So, because we live in a 42 year old home surrounded by huge trees everywhere...the winds/possible tornados are the most concern.

We are just taking it hour by hour and keeping an eye out but I think she feels good that we are all ready to go at a moment's notice.

I am praying for all my other HW family that is affected by this as well.

It came roaring through NW Ohio last night. Woke up to multiple tornado sirens. Luckily we didn't get any actual tornadoes. It was moving so darn fast, it was over, at least the scarey part, within a half hour. Hope everyone is OK down south.

My thoughts and prayers go out for all of you all that are affected or are going to be affected. Keep a good eye out. We're not supposed to get severe weather, but it can change in a minute, so we are keeping an eye out. Stay safe everyone.

Well in the area I live the storm was pretty severe this afternoon. We had a tornado on the ground between where I live and the town up from me. Our place didn't have any damage, but boy the wind was terrible, the rain was so heavy I could barely see the back yard.

Our landlord lives in PA and she saw that the tornado was in our town and she called around 6 this evening. She said, "Thank goodness, you answered the phone". She would have been worried if there wasn't an answer here. During Sandy the house had some water damage up in the ceiling of our formal living room. It has to do with a vent that was place up on the outside of the house, to air out the attic.

Well, Sandy brought horizontal rain and it blew thru the slats in the vent and got the insulation all wet, which made the ceiling wet. They still haven't had that fixed yet, with today's storm they are worried about more damage. Asked if I would mind if they at least get the vent area fixed so no water can get in. I said no, but I need a few days notice. They want to wait on repairing the ceiling in the living room, IF, it was okay with us.

I guess we don't mind. We never use that room in this house. It's not really noticeable and we rarely have people over to our home. I would like to have it fixed by Christmas though. Just more stress for me to deal with everything will have to be moved out of that room, cause it will all have to be repainted. My Grandfather clock is in there as well as some pieces of furniture from Europe that I don't want dust getting onto it.

I hope that everyone manages thru tonight without any serious issues from the Thunderstorms that are suppose to come thru on the East Coast tonight. SB hopefully, you and your Mom won't have to go to the hotel during the night.

At 3 AM this morning, the pending local weather report was by mid-afternoon here in western SC, terrible thunderstorms, quarter sized hail, winds to 70 mph. All talk and no show here, thank goodness.

The front passed us at 6 PM, lasted less than 45 minutes, perhaps 20 mph winds, less than 1/2" of rain, no hail, no tornadoes. Sometimes I think our mountains (yes there are mtns. in SC) protect us from these fronts, and often split them apart.

So we were fortunate this time. We are already 5 1/2" above normal for rain for the month of June, and its only the 13th.

I hope none of you here were hurt or damaged by this front. BTW, just prior to its passing here, it hit 96 degrees, just 1 away from an all time record high. I do not do well in hot weather.
