Hi All
I have a quick question I have two compression fractures in my neck which I feel could be the source of a lot of my pain both in upper back and lower back due to the way I hold myself to ease the pain. Does any one else have spinal compound fractures and does it cause you pain?

Hi Hibee,
I have a T12 compression fracture. I know mine does cause me pain. I'm not sure if its the fracture itself or the fact that its eroding the thecal sac. Coughing is enough to make me want to fall over. And I am having issues with weakness in my left leg because of it.

I don't have any in my spine but have had them elsewhere on my hands/feet/tibia....But I certainly know a lot about
spine issues and pain! LOL
You need to see a Board Certified, Fellowship trained, Neurosurgeon or Orthopedic surgeon. They will be able to give you the best advice on whether or not surgery would be best to fix this. It all depends on how long they have been there and whether it is causing enough harm that surgery is better than just letting it heal itself.
When did you find this out? Did you have a sudden accident/collision recently ? Or are they saying that they have been this way for years now.?

I have a compression fracture at T-11, and it causes the most pain in my back. It has caused other problems in my spine as well. How long have you had the compression fracture in your neck? I hope you're having a low pain evening.

Hibee, ouch!
I fractured compression fractured T4-T8 and T10-T12 a couple of years ago and I still have ongoing pain problems from them. Some of it has eased now, but for many months I had very severe referred pain through my ribs and chest, as well as the spinal pain.
Surgery isn't always appropriate (wasn't for me) - but I agree with SB about
the need to see a good ortho- or neurosurgeon.
How did you do it? If it's from minor trauma it would also be worth asking about
a bone density scan, also getting things like your calcium and vitamin D levels checked. I got all those fractures in my spine just from fainting getting out of bed and landing on my bottom of the floor - turned out I had almost the worst osteoporosis the doctor had ever seen in someone my age, low calcium, near-undetectable levels of Vit D...no real surprise that I broke!

I too am wondering how you found out, if it was an accident they would have referred to a Chiropractor for X-Rays and evaluation. And contrary to what you might hear, if you need surgery, they will tell you to go to your PCP and get a referral to an spine surgeon. Which doesn't make that term any less an oxymoron, spinal surgery fails 80% of the time, any other surgery with that fail rate wouldn't be performed and certainly wouldn't be paid for by insurance. Sorry for the rant and yes I have severall issues with spine that can't be fixed, only treated, I am only saying to try Everything else before you consider surgery. Please!

Hi All
Thanks so much for all the replies. To answer some of your questions I found out at the beginning of last year when I had an MRI scan due to the chronic back and neck pain I was getting my doctor thought I had Ankylosing Spondylitis hence the MRI scan. When I got the results from the MRI they said it was not AS but that I had Scheuermann's Disease and it had picked up that I had two compression fractures in my neck.
When these occurred I don't know but I have had a sore neck and back for a long time I also did a very high impact job, I was an outdoor sports instructor and have taken some big falls and impacts whilst rock climbing, skiing and windsurfing.
