A recent thread brought up a recurring thought for me, and I didn't want to steal that thread so I've started my own...

Just out of curiosity...when you guys say you use a safe...is it a wall safe? a transportable one? I don't have anyplace I could install a wall safe where I'm living right now. And I'm worried anything else could be carried off and/or broken into.

I've always sort of felt like if people intent on robbing you see a safe, then they automatically gravitate towards it because obviously if you're locking it up-its probably valuable.

So I've got a few strategic hiding spots for the meds not on my person at all times...which isn't ideal but it's worked for me for a number of years.

Thoughts/experiences/advice guys?

Great thread idea.

We have a portable type safe, like you kind buy from Staples or perhaps even Wal-Mart. Weighs about 25 lbs, and uses special keys. The dimensions are about 18" tall, 15" across the front, and 15" deep.

We keep it hidden in a bedroom closet, under a pile of boxes of shoes. No one would ever see it.

We keep our passports in it, a few other key documents, and all our serious meds. If I remember, it only cost about 50-60 dollars.

With that type of safe, you have many options to hide it, or move it to a new location.

I have a small safe that's bolted to the concrete floor of the house / its in a wardrobe covered in crap .but we also have 3 german shepherds:-) they can have the safe if they can get past the dogs lol most people panic just ringing the door bell with the greeting they get .

Yeah, I don't do a safe either.... just very discreet hiding spots.

We have a house full of children, multiple people in/out - and I feel highly confident w/ the system we have in place.

I feel the same as you do, LexiRae.... unless it was a mounted safe, I think anything else could be hauled off... and, as you said, it would make it more obvious for people to gravitate to that. The places where I have things hidden would seriously be the last place people (even "bad guys", lol) would look :)

Side note.... It may be me being paranoid -- but I wouldn't share exactly where you have your meds hidden on here.... it's an open forum and you'd be surprised how easy it is to get exact information (down to address, etc) from the bits/pieces of information we share on here. Just my two cents worth!

Like Squid mines bolted to the floor and no one has any idea how to get into it.

Years back I had a visitor help themselves and that won't happen again.

The worst was filled meds at Walmart and pulling into traffic was broadsided. Bad wreck . Taken to hospital, car totalled and meds gone!! The police, EMTs, or ppl that stopped to help, tow driver? No one cared and I cold Turkey the entire month!! On top of my new injuries.

Wont happen again if I can help it.

I have a lockbox which is then in turn in a safe. It's heavy as hell and it is hidden extremely well by other objects.

I was stupid though and took a box with me to the hospital last week. So I know that it's my own fault.

I tried the whole hiding them all over in places that nobody would think to look and trust me when I say I'm quite the perfect ninja when it comes to hiding them. Lol.

Had the family try to find them one time just to see if it was easy or difficult. No one found them at all.

When I didn't use the safe I would change hiding places about 3 times a week. Crazy I know. But that's how much I am terrified of what could potentially happen. Which ironically I have done to myself.

I have a hiding spot that no one can find. Other than the one day's worth that I keep in my pocket or my bra "pocket", and when I go to bed, I put it in my nightstand, and by that time there is only 1, so if someone were to steal that, well they'd only get 1.

Good thread, it's good to know info and I would urge caution when telling anyone about your medications, as you never know...only my hubby knows what meds i take other than my doctor's and I have a list I take with me to each doctors appointment and keep a list in your purse safely hidden of medications your on just in case of accidents...or get a medic alert...

I hide mine as well... I would like to invest in a safe but I was always afraid it would being attention where there may otherwise not be any. Good ideas in this thread!

Those fire proof boxes that are rectangular with the black handles you get at like walmart. The ones that are portable. I saw on Storange Wars if you drop them on the ground on the corner they will break open every time. I have seen them do it at least 10 different times.

So...we all have one thing in common. We're incredibly adept at hiding our meds...safe or no safe. Lol.

I'm in the group with the safe. sounds alot like the one Purgatory described. As with the other safe owners it is covered with closet detritis.
