Really need help any suggestions??? NC

Ok I am a college student working and trying to help my mom out. She has had back problems for quite some time now. A couple years ago she had surgery for an rupture disc in her back, it was almost getting ready to paralyze her leg because it was pressed against the nerve. Well now she has another disc and she feels as through it may doing the same thing. Last semester I was taking 17 credit hours in school and working a full time job. Its been very hard on me and I just hope my mom gets the care that she needs. She has been trying to get disability for quite some time been denied over and over again. Her condition is getting worst and worst everyday. Is there anyone who knows good doctors in the Greenville NC area or surroundings areas that could help us. Another thing is she doesn't have insurance I'm paying for everything out of pocket. I have called around and most of the doctors doesn't accept patients with no insurance. sad sad

If you lived in a state that was expanding Medicaid, that would be a help. But, unfortunately N.C. isn't expanding medicaid.

First let me commend you for helping your Mom. Im sorry she's having problems such as this.

If she doest have a disability attorney it would be to her benefit to get one. They take cases on a percentage basis so no money needed now. If she's been denied several times that's common,she just has to keep on it.

Unfortunately many Drs wont accept patients with no insurance and the best suggestion I have is to try and get her in to a teaching hospital, university medical schools are generally associated with these. I dont know where in NC you live but there are a few choices and even if you have to commute a bit at least she will get some help.They are income based so that would help you alot. The only other thing I can think of and Mercy&Grace may come back to help with this one,is whether or not NC has a "spend down " program.

What does the letter from SSA state is the reason she was denied disability ? If she isn't going to a dr regularly, that may well be the reason. I understand about not having the money to go to the dr. But medical records for at least the past few yrs showing the diagnostic tests, physical exams, treatments and meds that have been tried and their outcome are vital in disability cases. Her ago and education are also factors. If she hasn't worked long enough to qualify for SSDI, she can apply for SSI. SSI has income and resource criteria that must be met even if disability is met. She can get a attorney and the attorney will be paid out of her back pay before she receives it by SSA. If she isn't approved for disability, she owes nothing. It may take a few calls to find a attorney that will take a SSI case because they don't pay as much as SSDI, but there are attorney that will take SSi cases. She can Start the SSI Application process online by filling out a Online Disability Report, but she will need to go into the local office to file the actual SSI application. For SSDi she can file that online without having to go into the local office.

You didn't say at what stage she was denied. But, if she has been denied that many times and especially if it has been on the initial application without going before a ALJ, she really does need a attorney. Also if she has worked and had enough credits to qualify for SSDI. When you stop working, the credits begin to expire after a certain time frame.
