Hi all,
As some of you may recall, I was writing a book from mid-2011 through to early 2013. All the editing was done over the summer and the book came out a few days ago! The publisher sent me an advance copy earlier in the week and I should get a bunch of free copies to hand out in the coming weeks.
The book would be very dry to most, about
issues in the 18th Century, but in my field, it is being treated as a "groundbreaking" study of those issues and a professional society has scheduled a symposium on it for the spring. Reviews so far characterize it as a "masterful study," "essential reading," etc.. However, I do expect some negative reviews as I very harshly criticize the bad work some others have done. They'll likely respond in kind.
Now that things have smoothed out with my PM, I'm planning on giving him a signed copy, for without his help, there would have been no way I could have kept on working.
I'm already looking into my next book and have been submitting grant proposals to various funding organizations.

Hi SE,
You might recall the draft manuscript
in my hotel room when I visited Kansas. That was the book. :)

Cogito Congratulations! I have know a couple of people that have written books, perseverance can only begin to describe what it takes to successfully complete a book, I personally think that it is nothing short of being a labor of love!! Because I can't think of anything else that could keep a person motivated to undertake and complete such a massive project! You have my utmost admiration!

Thanks everyone! As I think back to writing it, I am surprised that I had it in me. I've actually started to look for grants for another book, but with little confidence that I'll be able to write another (though will continue to write shorter works).
Trudy -- I'd rather be anonymous... anyhow, it is the sort of book that no one will read except specialists in the field... but thanks!

Cogito,I also like to keep the privacy intact on message boards.I've been a member of a variety of Boards since 2003 and have never met anyone from those.
I think that's what allows us to
open up to each other.Again, congrats and best wishes,
Rick

Cogito,
I fully understand, I don't know what I was thinking yesterday posting that. It would definitely bring you out of your anonymity and I realize that none of us would want that.
I am an avid reader, and knowing someone that has written a book, no matter what it was about
was exciting for me to hear!
Once again, Congrats on your huge accomplishment!
