Ahh, excellent question.
And that does happen. I had the same surgeon who did both of my hips, and he's extremely well-recognized in this field, he's pioneered some of the newest implant devices and surgical techniques, he teaches other surgeons, and people fly in from all over the country specifically for him. He's been in the news several times because of his advancements and because he's pulled off and trialed some work other docs deemed too risky to attempt.
He's amazing and I still love my surgeon.
I had a perfect recovery from my first hip. Then I had my spinal fusions, then my other hip, and that hip had a slew of complications landing me back in the hospital and into rehab twice after being "formally" discharged.
Here's where I've got your back....that SI complex happens to fall into a grey area that overlaps BOTH the function of our spine and our pelvis and hip. I found my hip surgeon was telling me to check with my neuro for my back and my neuro said everything looked good, it was my hip.
All my XRays came out fine, mechanically everything was sound, so both felt I "shouldn't" be in pain. I kept a JOURNAL (so important) and wrote in it constantly. My last hip replacement was in June of this year but I was back in the hospital in July and still getting home care in August, using a walker.
The ortho kept telling me to just walk on it, stop babying it. I sensed he didn't believe I had this pain "for real" because so much time had passed.
That part got dismissed big time.
I did what they told me, and every time one referred me to back to Boston, I went. I went to every referral back and forth, I made endless visits, sometimes within 2 weeks of each other. In essence, I drove them crazy. Don't back down, and here's where we're caught...
In private, doctors will tell their PEERS (NEVER their patients) that when patients bring in lists, they're more apt to dismiss or shut down or limit treatment.
Buuuuut,....after I did everything, a nurse at rehab helped me make one of those Forbidden Lists. And I pushed.
I'm still in PT and only NOW making some progress I should have months ago. I'm still trying to get my referral through to a PMC up here in NH (we just moved) but they keep claiming they never got it (it's been 6 weeks now).
I have a new PT who completely understands the legitimacy of our SI pain and that connection and works with me how to get mobility.
This is really important for us, because if we do not nip this in the bud, we are on a time frame, we can get encapsulation and it can lead to more troubles.
For me personally, I will not OK any injections.
Bear in mind, my fusions were done 10 months ago, no wait,...11 months ago, and then the hip in June. And it's very, very true. For me anyway, SOME aspects of healing take longer.
I've encountered dismissive appointments. You have to limit your questions to 2-3 major concerns and make multiple visits, and keep at them.
I could go on but I've already written a book here. There's more to it, but know that what you're feeling is very legitimate and frankly, common sense.
