Psoriatic arthritis

I had surgery in May on one pinky finger due to Dupytrends Contracture. As the weeks thru PT went by the pinky is frozen in a 45' angle and all the other fingers have twisted and cannot hold things or
Not to mention the pain.

To add insult to injury. The surgeon said well I removed the thickened tendon, it looks like the surgery set off a psoriatic arthritis flare in the rest of my hand.

That's all that's it that's all she wrote. Goodby... No referrals no nothing not even a attempt to repair damages.

Has anyone experienced a stone cold surgeon like this? YIKES!
I hope not, it seems to be the norm these days.

Un fortunately psoriatic arthritis is worse than Rumy arthritis. As many biological meds will help some in my opinion the bio drugs like REMECADE , Embral have not been on the market that long. As they have horrendous side effects. My friend died from Embral she contracted a rare cancer, due to the bio grubs shuts down the autoimmune system so there are no anti-bodies to fight off infections or disease.

I do keep up with PT exercises but within time there's not much available.

Yes the freeze effect is the damage to the knuckles and hardening of the tendons.

I have known many who have used MTX but not FDA approved for PA. & cyclosporin they are bio drugs. Too many unknowns, research is not very clear on the side effects on these drugs during clinical trials. As I get cronic bronchitis easily from a cold & can't take them. My auto immune system is really wacked.

As I was told to not get a flue shot this season due to autoimmune disease and all the flare ups I had this year alone.

I am in the middle of fighting for a recalled hip joint to be removed due to a recall by the manufacturer. As it is very painful & just had a nucelar CAT Scan done, they inject isotopes into the blood stream.

Then I go for a heavy metals test for cobalt & chromium shavings that get into the blood stream from the hip prosthesis at some level can poison the liver & large organs. That's the reason the hip is recalled in the first place. It has taken me 2 years to get this far as all of these issues could be connected to heavy metals in my system.


My dr does not want me to take MTX as I will also need sergury to remove the recalled hip soon. I have joined a class action suit for pain and suffering. We need to connect the dots with all these med issues in the same period of time.


The original surgeon left the state and only one hip revisionist is taking his recall cases. And she has been out on maternity leave for 6 months. Now with winter here the new hospital is 60 mi.round trip. To hard on my husband to drive back & forth in winter weather. Thank you for UR suggestions. Your very informed.
We had a huge ice storm today and it's 12 degrees. The coldest in 15 years. The whole state is shut down including the airports several across the US. They are calling it Ice Friday. All due to a huge arctic front going across the US.


I just want this done yet things could get worse if to much bone damage is done from the metals and the pseudo tumors around the surgery site. It's just crazy. I feel so fortunate because it is not too serious. However I am not looking foreword to hip replacement again. The first hip was done 13 years ago, the recalled hip 2 years ago.


I also have eye issues due to cataract surgery. The eye sight is worse after 3 surgeries than it was with the cataracts. I also have narrow eye glaucoma and dry eye since the surgery. No one will tell me what happened & why my sight in that eye is worse. I have tried to get to the root and seen two other eye specialists. No clear answer.

Macular degeneration is very serious and I hope u have a good eye specialist and put drops in UR eyes religiously. My mom had that and she did very well up to her 80's when she passed. It seems as we get older we take longer to heal and the darndest things medically happen. With no rhyme or reason. It's not just one med issue it's 3 or more at the same time. YIKES !

Where do u have RA? I would like to know if u have tried any other meds for pain or PT FOR MOVEMENT AND exercise. I do like massage and water exercise. Until I get out of the water everything
Hurts again.

Yes Susie is a great help.
I had a mri of my hands done in 2009 and they found two joints with damage to them and from there the battle to get and stay on Methotrexate. The methotrexate does help as I've definitely noticed my knee swelling has gone down and I have skinny knee's for the first time in like almost ever....So it does help, but I still have a lot of inflammation. My feet get pretty badly swollen. I'll know in March more about my eye's Thank you for asking!

I did do Pool PT this Summer, but then had some things go bad for me and I cannot do any Winter pool PT at all... I found wearing a wetsuit shortie helped for the pool PT as I'm always cold because of Rayaund's(SP?) but the restrooms are small and it is kind of hard getting outta a shortie. But for pool therapy I would recommend the wetsuit shortie. (Leisure Pro sells them)

Yes as soon as I get out and to the car my pain was back. so in the future I might get someone to install a small spa like pool in my house then I could just stay in the pool....

One doctor literally told me that he'd have me I need to be in the hotest pool for as long as possible. I left that doctor just because he was rude to me...didn't take in my fear of the pools, so this past Summer it did take their time coaxing me into the pool...Still afraid of pools mind you, just not terrified anymore...

Hope the days ahead find you doing better....Just keep trying those finger's to see if it might un freezee...

Duprytrends Contracture on one pinky hand surgery to remove all the enlarged thickened tendons too. However he just said the surgery just set off a flare in my other fingers with psoriatic arthrotis. I will get another opinion as soon as the weather get better. We are have a Arctic front move rhru all the roads are iced up. I am so disappointed that this surgeon just blew me off.

The reason to have it done is to keep the hand from freezing up. All my others fingers were fine flexible until the surgery on the pinky

I appreciate your understanding and I am OK with UR evaluation of my situation. Really your absolutely right. I have been sick for 2 years with this recalled hip. It has taken 2yrs., so long to get this out...still waiting and getting sicker by the day.

I had an appt last week with my rheumy as we had a arctic front come thru all is iced up roads closed. Our water pump froze. So as soon as I can get in to the Dr we will discuss all this. I will start MTX. I have a list of meds. for Pa. Not easy to treat as I had psoriasis on hands & feet for years as I keep them in remission with occlusion.( see my methods on psoriasis page) then the surgery blew PA out.

I KNOW you took a great deal of time reading thru this history. As it is being so busy now so close to the Holidays. I especially want to thank you for all you advice. Your very through and I totally get every word and will not take UR efforts & advice for granted.

UR right as rain as the other here have offered the same idea's.

I totally agree with your experiences and analysis of this situation.

I have been in hand psoriasis remission for 3 years using the occlusion method since a small child. (( please see my post to Judith in the psoriasis group,for treatment and solutions for creams and steroids that work ,required to put pp of hands and feet in remission))as well as other types of Psoriasis.

I agree the PA came out for the first time from the surgery for Dupytrends Contracture ( thickening of tendons at base of third joint on the rt. pinky finger. That started the house of cards to fall the Psoriatic arthritis took a cue from the stress of surgery. Never had any signs of PA. Before. Always been hand pp & in remission for 3 years. Then surgery as I agree with u set PA off. I also am aware that hand & feet pp can eventually lead to PA.

If we don't get another ice storm as predicted for tomorrow, I have another Appt with a rheumy. So keep UR fingers crossed.

I am not a fan of bio drugs. I will not take them. I have read all the clinical studies and trials from 5 different Companies. Some of the bio drugs shut down the immune system and I can't do that due to I get pneumonia & bronchitis. So I am not a candidate for bio meds.

As you know ice storms can shut down a whole state. And flights backup. This is the coldest Northwestern Oregon has been in 15 years. And finally got running water after the pump froze up 2 days ago.

I use Voltaren a anti inflammatory gel & hot gel gloves. Helps a lot.
But I will see what the rheumy says tomorrow. Wax vs gel gloves.

Thank you so much for sharing all UR advice and experience. I appreciate all the info I can get. I truly believe more information leads to better health.

Yes I take folic acid every day. I went to my Rumy today and we discussed many meds as MTX was one. We decided on meloxicam (mobic) a NSAID. It works by reducing hormones that causes pain in the body. The minute my BP RISES I'm off it.
Then he referred water PT and a sleep a consultant.
So I will keep my eye on any side effects. It's just my quality of life has been zipping down so fast in the last 6 months.

Have you taken Mobic? Also I have tried many drugs in the past usually the side effects catch up . Very difficult disease to treat all these issues. Not much new meds to help really in 20 years.

So my itisis are worse & I try not to complain as I am fortunate for my sweet husband to help me. My EDS has contributed to a lot of pain & psoriatic arthritis & many itisis...I have had arthritis since a teen. I usually just ignored & hid the pain. Now it's too exhausting.

I want to feel better and be better to just turn the page of this chapter of life to a better chapter pain free life. Positive reinforcement no time for a pitty party.
I'm gonna go get 2 new puppies and 2 Paso Fino Horses all ready for adoption. Luv, Luv, Luv ....

Animals is a good cure for what ailes me. Better than medicine.

Hi Char. I wrote a response and all of a sudden this site went to my password to check in and lost it all. So starting over.

I am glad u have UR kitties to comfort u. They are cheap therapy,
And are much better than any pro.

So what I wrote earlier all went into cyber space that was about my husband had a bleed in his intestines. As u mentioned Mobic caused a ulcer OMG! His loss of blood was caused from aspirin & ibuprofen . It took teams of them & 2 weeks of getting their teams to communicate with each other. In emergency he had 3 pints of blood left and there they gave him a transfusion of 8 pts. Then back to a room the next week to find the leak. The computer didn't work in his room and they could not give him a transfusion of blood till the computer was fixed. As this was a week later he lost 7 more pts of blood we had to wait 6 hours for the computer in his room to work. They look up and down his system with scopes and finally someone remembered to order the pill cam. They finally found the leak and fixed it . The moral. Never get sick over the Holidays. Hospital staff is minimal are best and to much irresponsibility. I was ready to strangle them all. It was a icy winter so I stayed at the hospital, but had to come home daily to feed all the 4 legged kids. This happened 4 years ago. This is the short story.
Your gonna smile over this one.....As over my barn as most of my grand kids hate mucking out the barn. So my sign over the barm says "A $5 fine for I may look into norco next month.

And I may fix the heater in the hot tub as it can be helpful for arthritis but very bad for Plaque psoriasis. It's a catch 22 I guess. I'm so hoping you can feel better soon.
