notification of meds in emergency

i wanted to ask my doc this but totally forgot the other day...Is it wise to wear some sort of med id bracelet or necklace notifying of meds taken in case there is ever an emergency? i wear something called roadid when i ride my bike...it's got a website with a code or an 800 # 1st responders can call if i ever get whacked by a car and can get my med history...but i don't wear it daily...
with being on narcotics 24-7 what would happen if i were to get into an accident or something but was not able to speak and let anyone know...what would happen if they gave me more pain meds before i could tell them no? kinda freaking me out. thanks! by the way - roadid is pretty cool i think the site is roadid.com in case you want to check it out. i guess i could wear it all the time - it's not bad looking...

Ok. Good. I didn't know if they give pain Meds or other Meds that would interact badly as standard protocol in an accident if bad injuries etc are visible. Makes sense they wod ask first. Thanks. Makes me feel a little better. Not that I'd want to be on that position ever- just one of those things that's been ony mind lately after hearing about some bad accidents.

I certainly would worry about the other things they would give you. Say you had to be taken to the OR ? Many meds used to put you to sleep could be enough to tip you over the edge with your daily meds onboard . There are various other reasons i want them to know what Im taking . Maybe not life threatening but here's a good example from my work experience .

Lady in gas station becomes dizzy and disoriented . Clerk calls 911 and the first thing they do when they can't get coherent information from her is go to her purse for personal info . They find meds such as oxy and lortab and one of the EMTs makes assumption that possibly she's Od . Just in case she's given Narcan injection on the way to the hospital . Brings on extreme withdrawl as well as pain and until they get ahold of her PM whose name happened to be on the script and find out she's a CPer she suffers needlessly ?

She had a low potassium from a simple UTI .

I have a phone app i use called ICE and have stickers and papers in my wallet . The app is accessible without having to unlock my phone .

I have a letter I keep in my purse and waller with my complete medical.history and current prescription list. And my ICE contact has the same letter.

Such a wonderful idea. With all of my health issues going on right now, I definitely need some sort of ID tag or bracelet. Thanks for this , very much so.

I have a number of bracelets from Laurens Hope. Everything's interchangeable, and I figure if I have to wear something, at least I should like it.

I never thought about needing it for pain meds.

Genuine question: How does something as small as a bracelet or pendant have sufficient room to list medications (ie: for those of us on so many we could write a book? Or at least a hefty chapter? Not to mention allergies?)

The ones I posted are travel USB ports so the information is saved digitally... The doctor or EMT just has to put the stick into their computer, laptop or tablet and the have access to all the information. Also, you can change and update it as needed with minimal effort. Its as simple as updating a Word document!

with all the concerns about possible virus introduction, etc. it is possible your health care system will not allow the use of a USB stick or similar type of device. some health care systems require their USB devices to use encryption before they will work in their system, some systems disable USB ports altogether.

While I totally agree with having information on a mini drive, I've been in a situation a couple of times where ambulance didn't have ability to, or maybe just didn't as a matter of policy, use a USB device, and it took 45 minutes to get to the nearest hospital. Therefore, if you are using one of these items, I would put anything life-threatening in print. You can ask a jeweler to etch onto metals, or add a metal tag with printing. The thing needs to be clipped or stuck somehow so it's noticeable and not just thrown in with the lipstick.

I have a bright yellow card I printed myself that lists the critical information, front and back. Yes, I do have that much critical information, and more. Printing is done sideways so it's readable on one end and shows up like the end of a credit card. It also notes there is more information in my purse. I have a complete list of my allergies and intolerances/sensitivities, current medications and important health information on several pages folded in half in a zippered clear plastic cover from a new pillowcase. It keeps papers clean and unwrinkled.

Most phones today recognize ICE and when it's entered show In Case of Emergency automatically. It's well known internationally now and a good way of getting the right person called.

In many places 1st responders are taught to look on the side of the refrigerator for a packet of medical information. A good thing if you are at home.

Even if you can talk you may forget critical things or may be unable to respond coherently. Your relatives don't always know life-threatening information either. I do all I can to cover every contingency.

Medic alert gives you a bracelet and a card and if you have a child and they need something they will give a free bracelet to the child, they gave my daughter a free bracelet and card. So, they do go out of the way to make sure our kids are taken care of which is what I liked the most.
