Short term help die to an injury... any ideas?

My mom was walking her dog who saw another dog and ran fullforce into her, injuring her knee. There are no broken bones but she can't put any weight on it and they have ordered an MRI. She works at Carmax and is unable to work since she cat walk. She opted out of short term disability... Is there anything available to help her? She called and asked me about unemployment but since she is unable to work, I don't think she qualifies. Do you guys have any suggestions?

The first thing I thought of were those Aflek commercials!

There must be other similar type of supplemental programs. The only thing is, I'm afraid, that it's something she would have had to have been enrolled in "before" all of this.

Do you know why opted out of applying for short term disability?

I'm not familiar with things like federal assistance programs, but what I've found helpful in the past when I've fallen on hard times were things like food banks, my church, soup kitchens,....networking with people who can "donate" to her and help her along.

Once she gets the MRI she'll have a better idea of how long of a journey this may turn out to be.

Sorry to hear about your mom, Linds. The unemployment thing is out because when filing for it a person is saying they are physically capable of working. I am assuming that her job will not let her do any desk type work. I sure hope her MRI comes back ok and no problems show up on that.

Sorry about your Mom Linds . Unfortunately theres nothing I can think of. Its silly when we look back and remember those few dollars we saved by opting out thinking nothing is ever going to happen right ? Hindsights 20/20 in this case and it happened to me.

I'm worried about how long her job will hold . Knee injuries can take months to heal and many types require arthroscopy to fix and thats more weeks off.

The only resource I can think of is getting help with bills and rent . Check with her homeowners insurance if she's covered ,she may have something there that would help.

Thanks you guys! I was afraid of that... And my mom is hardheaded that she'll try to work anyway to keep from losing her job and make her knee worse. At first she didn't even want to go to the doctor. She posted about her knee on Facebook and I had to call and pretty much yell at her to go in to the doctor. And he asked if she wanted something for pain and she told him that she doesn't like pills so he didn't give her an antiinflammatory, muscle relaxer or anything. I told her she needs something so her leg can heal quicker but she won't listen.

I will definitely keep you all in the loop about the MRI. And Vickie, she said the same thing about the short term insurance! The problem I have is that always turn me down because of my preexisting condition but I try anyway. I think she will from Now on.

Linds get your mom to take some Ibuprofen if she can take it, it will help with the inflammation. If she can't take than perhaps some tylenol. If she has swelling she needs to pack it in ice & keep it elevated as much as possible.

There are states that offer short term/temp disability assistance as long as they meet ______ criteria (usually can't make more than some benchmark). This is for non-work related injuries, too. Attorney Google, Esq., is your friend.

Google "short term disability state" and see what you come up with. Good luck!

There is SSDI, but it is long term. Disability has to have lasted at least 5 months and be expected to last at least 1 yr. There is a 5 month waiting period from the time you file to when you can draw, if you're approved. But, it isn't easy and could take 2yrs or longer to be approved.

It depends on the state. A few states have unemployment set up where a person can draw from it for any reason for a few weeks at least any time they are unable to work.
