I'm meeting my new PCP on Tuesday, how do I do this again?

So for the first time since I was 15, I'm getting a PCP. I've been with my old one forever but she doesn't accept my new insurance. Is it okay if I just give the doctor the medical history form that I gave my son in case of emergencies? Or do I have to write it all down on the medical forms? And is there anything I need to remember to tell them about my pain management doctor? I know the usual about not getting prescriptions but I would like for them to work together regarding my care (like the old one did with both my PM and OB/GYN )?

I don't really need anything from the new doctor except my prescription from Linzess but my PM has been on my case about getting established with a PCP to avoid ER visits when I get boils, which I've gotten a whole bunch of in the last couple weeks! I ended up in the ER on Superbowl Sunday and they think I have an active staph infection (yikes!). So can you guys think of any helpful hints or suggestions since its been soooo long since I've taken on a new PCP? and before my folks really did all the work. LoL

And I want to talk to someone about getting the genetic BC screen thingy that Angelina had... Can I request that through a PCP?

Each dr has their own medical history form with all the other new patient paperwork. A pcp can order that test, but may not feel comfortable doing so and may refer you to a specialist. It also depends on weather or not your insurance will approve it. The pcp may or may not want to work with your other drs. Sometimes it takes going to a few pcps to find the right one for you. I think everyone gets nervous when they see a dr or the first time, you aren't alone.

Linds, your first appt with the new doctor is most likely going to involve filling out a "new paitent" form at the office which you will be asked to list all your medications, health history, current problems/issues, etc and possible the reason for your current visit.

Then once you actually see your PCP then bring up any and all concerns you have even though you may have put them on the forms which are more often for those who make up your medical file than for the doctor.

Thank you both! I loathe paperwork... I wonder if they will let me pick it up early and bring it back on Tuesday.

I sure hope its a good fit.

Sometimes they will let you get the paperwork ahead of time to fill out. Just remember, like Jim said, when you see the dr go over everything again as well as everything that wasn't on the new patient forms. You may want to write things down that you want to discuss with the dr between now and your appt and remember to take it with you (LOL) These are some of the reasons people get nervous when seeing a new dr. There is so much to remember. Writting it down so you can take it with you and refer to it doing your appt may help reduce the nerves some.

Linds, generally your PCP is the core of your healthcare team, every other doctor being an extension. Almost all insurance and medicaid programs require that your PCP refer you to all other medical specialty and some have the final say in all tests ordered.

The genetic marker test for BC is a very expensive test and most insurance will not cover it.
