Chronic TMJ pain

Hi, I've been over on lyme forum for several months, but this tmj pain is off the charts and need to know if anyone over here has any answers. I'm especially interested in a natural, no medication remedy such as essential oils. Thank you :)

Hi Shelly, I developed TMJ after having an automobile accident, was sitting stopped at a red light & was rear ended.

I began having headaches that started at the base of my neck & radiated up & came over to one of my ears. I had neck & shoulder pain too. I went to my dentist for a regular check up & got to talking about my headaches & he said it was TMJ & referred me out to a specialist. The specialist fitted me with upper & lower splints that I had to wear in my mouth 24/7. It was awful trying to get use to those things. I never did learn how to talk with all of that in my mouth, lol. So, I slept wearing them. Now they have mouth guards in the drug stores & they are not expensive, but you can try those as long as they are the soft kind.

I also found myself a very good massage therapist to work on getting the knots out of my neck & shoulders. I had deep tissue massages done for this. But, you do need to drink plenty of water after having a massage or else you may end up with flu like symptoms. When those muscles start relaxing & the spasms are going down they release toxins right into the blood stream. True story always drink lots of water after a massage. I thought sure, found out the hard way & it only took once for me learn too, lol.

If you can get fitted for a TENS Unit some times these can be helpful. Usually you can get your dr to refer you to a physical therapy place & they let you rent the unit to see if it helps & then they will try to get your health insurance to pay for one. Or you can go on Ebay or Amazon they have them on there really cheap too.
