SG,
I experience similar pain, but it seems to run from my SI joint around and into my groin, like a vice grip. The SI joint is tender to the touch, and yep, my butt hurts!
But, I've also got L1-L5 fusion/decompression/laminectomies and both my hips are total replacements.
So while that's a difference in our stories, the pain you're describing sounds so familiar.
One of the things that my PT did for the pain I was getting on the front of my upper thigh/hip,...which is where the hip flexor is, and that's a muscle that runs very deep and attaches to the lumbar spine,...well, he did a lot of soft tissue work on it because at least part of what was causing that pain came from that hip flexor being habitually contracted and tight.
It's something non-invasive you may want to check out. By the way, while it took a while (a few months of this poking around), and then subsequent exercises (which of course I continue to this day),...it's made vast improvements.
