Hi just joined here today and looking for advice,since i was 19 i suffered with pain and swelling in my right knee,ova the years several doctors would always send me for xrays n the same conclusion was its arthritus take these pills,i got to the point that most nights i spent up in pain not leaving the house as i couldent walk,it wasent till i was 37 that i had moved n changed doctors aft an especially bad few weeks as soon as i was able to walk i went there n begged for help,i had an mri scan which found the pvns,iv had two ops the first worked for 9months the second for 7months n when it does come. Back its not gradual its straight in to the last stages,iv been refused a knee replacement also radiotherpy as i amb too young(im 39)also refused funding for pills as the course is exppensive,is there anyone that can give me any tips for managing the pain and stiffness?i live in the uk

Hello & welcome to the forum. I have littled knowledge of your condition. I can tell you there are some older posts here at the forum about this. We have not had anyone recent come along with disease. You may want to use our search feature here at the top & type in PVNS & read what others have said.

Perhaps if we have others here at the forum that is located in the Uk one will see this & perhaps be able to give you some direction with drs. In the states about the only way a dr will rx any type of pain medication is a pain mgt dr. Our rules & guidelines here are very strict & enforced by all drs.

One thing I will suggest that will help with the stiffness is if you can get in a swimming pool & exercise your knee it will help you keep it moving which is real important. In water you are weightless & run little risk of further injury.

Thankyou i hve read thru a lot of posts n while from what i can gather there is not a lot that can bé done currently hve no access to a computer so i have difficulty joing a british site,main trouble i have at the moment is that they are very unwilling to do anything other than an op of which the results dont last long its great for the time being but always waiting for the pain to come back,just to go out for a twenty min walk leaves me in pain n unable to do much for a few days aft so trying to find ways where i can get on with my life with the least pain

I am sorry that you did not find much info in the prior posts. I guess because there were not many others here with this disease they moved on looking for answers & I completely understand that.

I am like you when it comes to repeat surgery, I have had 4 on one knee & 1 on the other & I am done until I can no longer walk. At that time I was told it would be replacements for both.

Other than getting into a pool, using heat & ice packs whichever works the best & of course elevating your leg if swelling is involved.

Please keep checking in here as others will pop in from time to time. Keep us posted on how you are getting along.

Hi _ I use Salon Pas Pain relief pain patchs[ they are bought at pharmacies............they really work

Was at first told that 3 ops was the max alowed now the surgeon says that i should b prepared for an op every year,not something i want to undertake,other courses have been closed to me so its pretty much up to me now to try and keep the pain nd swelling to a min so i can get thru each day as best i can thank you for all your advice i do appricate it

I think having surgery once a year is too much. Have you considered trying to find an orthopedic dr that deals with knees only & nothing else? I learned the hard way in the beginning with my knees that. After finding one that delat with knees only, it made a big difference.

Thats exactly my thoughts ie surgery in sep 2o13 back on my feet dec 2o13 then march 2o14 its back there is no decline back into it one day ur fine then the next its full blown,if i went back to doctors now then surgery will take place round august so it will take me to my third op in 2 and a half years,unfortunatly little is known of the condition over here and while my surgeon is very good i hve to travel round two hours to get to him,like iv said they consider me to young for other opptions that will get rid of it im 39 one option is radiotherpy which they will consider when im 5o so im willing to try anything that will give me quality of life

You have to do whatever you feel is right for you. I totally understand what you are saying about the repeated surgeries. Every time we have surgery it weakens the area somewhat. Sometimes we just have to draw the line in the sand & stick by it.

I hope you can find something that will give you some type of relief.

For the past week been stuck in house can get around on crutches but detest going out with them feel a bit panicky,i no i will have to face another op sooner than later hope to put it off as long as poss,have a docs app booked now to see if there is a better choice of mediation for me,also doing physio excersises they have given me aft ops to improve the strength in the knee n i think the swimming suggestion is a good one will b defo trying that along with if i can get them here the patches there is cream but as its expensive i wasent sure if its worth a try im also looking into herbal anti inflamitries have to b carefull that it wont interfere with current mediation
