Hi, I'm new to this forum, but I really need help.
I just had my second spinal fusion in the last year.I have a pain management dr. who refuses to adequately
treat my pain level. He has me on 3- 5 mg. oxycodone's per day! I'm less than one month post op and I'm in horrible pain! His nurse is trying to label me a drug seeker because my surgeon wrote me a prescription when my pain mgt. dr. was out of town! I worked in surgery as a first assistant for 30 years and I know the Meds that are given to other patients.Is there somewhere that I can find documentation on what the guidelines for adequate
Pain management for post op fusion patients are!

I called the S. Carolina medical Board and they asked if I wanted to file a complaint. They told me that I did have grounds to d0 so. I don't want to do that , I want to give Him a chance to rectify this.
What I can do is ask for a referral to another dr. after I do some re-search.
I just wanted to find a starting point so that I could say that my concern is valid.

Since you will be paying for all of it out of your own pocket, do you need a referral ?

Hi Vinnie & welcome to the chronic pain forum. Wow, you just had surgery & the dr is refusing to get your post op pain under adequate control, what a bum. You really need a new PM dr that is for sure. No one should suffer like this when a person is pretty fresh from surgery. There really is not a guideline to go by for post op pain, we are pretty much at the mercy of the drs.

Vitals.com may be a good place to start looking for a new PM dr in your area. Your PCP or surgeon either one can make a referral to a PM dr. as most do require a referral. I would make a list of medications that I have been on & would state what helped or did not help. That may help keep you from being put on something that does not work well for you.

It really is tough out there these days with all drs when it comes to discussing pain medication. Unless you see a PM dr the chance of getting help is slim to none.

I almost hate to write this, but,...yeah, I tend to agree.

I feel like I get more appropriate medical attention now that I have the battle scars of multiple surgeries. As if that proves my pain more than before I went under the knife.

I'm sure it's more complex than that, and I'm simplifying the experience. But yes,...it does seem to make an impact.

Regardless of the doctor you see you need to be completely honest and blunt with him/her. Flat out tell the doctor what is and is not working. Tell him your goals and expectations. You don't need to be an ass but do not go in and say something like "I am doing so-so."

The goal of pain management is not to get out of pain but rather to make the pain bearable.
