Darn pain flaring up again

I just don't know what's going on and nobody has the same opinion as to what's happening either!

Yesterday my neck has flared up so badly I can hardly move it, couldn't sleep for the pain, I do nothing different, this just happens, just "being" hurts.

Been through 2 rounds of PT, last one made everything worse, Chiro/acupuncture made it worse, massage helps sometimes for maybe a day...

Have a herniated disc at C7-T1 but neuro said not near enough to a nerve to cause this pain which also radiates down my left arm/fingers...maybe it's muscular?? my left shoulder is in pain too from the accident and flares up.

Lower back hurts and pain radiates in to me left leg/big toe.

It's been 17 months since my accident, why is this not clearing up??? :(

Take Norco but it hardly touches the pain, am having an EMG in 13 days but physiatrist expects it to come back as not the nerves, so what is it!

The EMG is going to be my neck, left shoulder/arm and lower back, lower back does show disc SOOO close to a nerve.

I am so beyond frustrated, I try to think positive but keep thinking too that this is never going to go back to 100%.

Has anyone experienced any of this going on? and if it's not from the nerves could it be all muscular and what should be the best treatment for that?

You have every right to be frustrated, but the more frustrated you are the more you'll hurt as well, so maybe try some relaxation techniques, cd's with calming music an help.
The Emg testing might very well show something, it's not the bests of test, but it can possibly help locate which nerves are out of whack.
If you've not yet had mris or ct scans then push your doctor towards getting those.
Many well wishes to you and I hope your doing better soon.
Others will come by with better advise so pay attention to them, this is a great place for support and please keep us posted on your emg results..

Thank you both so much.

Today I am in absolute agony, it hurts to breathe, to stand, to sit and I'm getting hardly any sleep, have some Ambien but am like a zombie for 2 days afterwards,

My lower back is so painful too I cannot describe it, went to the store with my daughter and it hurt to sit in the car and to walk and wanted to cry, am wearing the back brace right now which is helping a little.

The Norco is not working.

Yes, had MRI's done, now going for the EMG.

I guess I'm afraid if the EMG testing shows no nerves involved I'm back to square one and it could be muscular which I have no idea how to treat, I cannot live with this pain and the incredible flare up's.

You're so right though, I have to try to relax as it makes it worse being upset. :(

my doctor swears more people have complex regional pain syndrome than any doctor with dx or realize. He has a theory of it being why so many people have wide spread pain after an incident that people just can't explain.
Know that doesn't help but wanted to share.

I've found frankincense essential oil to really help my inflammation btw

Thundercloud, have you thought about getting another opinion from another neurosurgeon? Preferably a board certified, fellowship trained neurosurgeon. Just because one said one thing, does not mean he is correct. Many drs have different opinions. If this were me, I would get my MRI's & get another opinion. You are having problems & you need someone that will take an interest. I will tell you that muscular pain can be a tough cookie to deal with.

Have you tried nuking a wet hand towel in the microwave & making a hot pack & wrap it around your neck? Be very careful because the towels can get very hot. Wet moist heat works better on my neck than a moist heating pad.

I will caution you about the EMG testing, that is not one of the most reliable tests for nerve involvement in the spine. I have been told by several specialists it has about a 75% accuracy level. I have seen mostly positive EMG testing when testing for carpal tunnel syndrome. I have seen hundreds of normal EMG's when the person ended up having surgery & the dr found pinched nerve either in the cervical or lumbar area. The reason I am telling you this is I don't want you getting your hopes up the EMG will reveal your fate.

Yes, I have a TEN's machine and it doesn't help at all, I use a neck collar you warm in the microwave and wrap that around my neck, it feels good when it's on for the most part, when this is so flared up though it doesn't help.

The neurosurgeon I saw said the EMG tests are 100% accurate so that upset me inside as I know that's not true, just so fed up with all this, the pain rules my life, couldn't even go for a nice walk yesterday.

I don't want to live having steroid injections and living on pain pills, then trying to get through the day, feeling down about all this.

Any kind of movement hurts, well...just being awake hurts, this is awful :(

I cannot believe no Dr has ever heard this before but some say I am a mystery, just don't believe them and think they just want you to go on your way.

Please go for a second opinion. Something may have been missed that could be causing you such great pain.
