No sciatic pain for me. My surgery was cervical. It took 7 months to know that I was getting better, but recovery continues.

Best wishes for you on this Long Recovery Road.

Oh ok Abilene. Thanks! Today was a rough achy day. I'm so ready to feel consistency. Praying and hoping I'll see a huge improvement in the next four weeks!! It's mainly just my nerve that bothers me. Wish it didn't take so long to heal!

Calling all you sciatic patients......I haven't done anything different the past week or so, but the last few days it's been super achy and tight. Can it become more achy when it's in a "super" healing mode? I just kinda made that term up. Lol.

Ok question. So I'm 7.5 months out from surgery and I went for a walk the other day. Nothing intense or uphill. I walked for about 20 min and the next day and today my hips toward the middle of lower back are super sore and stuff. Is that normal? I mean it was just walking. Wondering if its bc of the bone fusion?

I had spinal reconstruction L1-L5, lots of fusions, hardware, grafts, blah, blah, blah....and that was 1.9 years ago.

My sciatica has been flaring up in both legs lately, past week or two in particular. Yesterday I went for a walk, and just like you, maybe 20 minutes or so (I trip easy so I walk slowly)....and my sacrum felt swollen, my mid back hurt and yep, the sciatica was flared up.

Sometimes it just flares up. Surgery can repair mechanical problems but that doesn't mean we can't inflame soft tissue. We can over-do it just like people who haven't had surgery can. Give it a little time. We have to expect to have good days and bad days.....

Sorry your sciatic has been flaring up. My soreness doesn't feel so much like soft tissue but like a bone type aching. But I don't know. I guess I didn't expect light walking would do that to me. Maybe I need to cut down on the time and start slower? When might I expect to feel more consistent with how my body feels?

How are you feeling now on this long road to recovery that has many twists and turns. Wish it could be more consistent but it seems that is not how our bodies heal.

Hi Abilene!! Thanks for checking in. I'm feeling ok. Can't tell too much of a difference froma month ago. But now I have exciting news. I'm pregnant. Little nervous about it, but my doctors are ok with it and say I should be fine. Hoping that by the time I start getting big things will have settled down more. That will be around my one year post op mark.

I haven't seen that website before you sent, but I'm gonna take a look at it thanks!

Ready for more consistency and my lower middle hips to stop hurting/aching and for my sciatic to completely calm down!!'

Yes, I'm sure you are eager for all the surgery pain to settle down, you have a very important reason. Best wishes to you and your family on this blessed event.

Thank you!! Excited and nervous. It's in the Lords hands and I'm trusting it's all gonna be ok and that the next few months will really show improvement and all. Wish it didn't take so long!! Thought things would be resolved by now!!

Hey everyone! Needing a little encouragement today. I've been quite consistent doing my PT exercises at home (maybe taking one day off a week or so) and it seems like the past few days my back has been more stiff and sore. I haven't really done anything different. Normally it's a little stiff in morning and loosens up but its felt right most of day. Any insight? Thanks!

Now that you are pregnant, expect the back pain to increase as you move along through your pregnancy. This is a very common complaint for pregnant women that never had back pain before. Take care.

Hello, It's good to hear from you again!

As you know recovery does not continue in a straight line. You can have a little set back from so many things-doing too much, sitting too much, not wearing proper walking shoes, nutrition, posture, sleep, weather. Then you have that baby growing inside you that could contribute to back pain. Did you have back pain with your previous pregnancy?

After foot surgery I was given orthotics to wear in my shoes that had the added bonus of helping my low back pain.

You can think and think and may still not be able to know what is causing that pain. But I do hope it decreases and allows you to be more comfortable very soon.

Hi Abilene! Good to hear from you. Thank you for your insight. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around how this healing process works. Kinda stinks actually that it can't be determined. I'm a planner and this is way outside my personality.

I had mild back pain with my first pregnancy but nothing too bad. I'm hoping and believing it's not gonna be bad with this baby. I am researching to find a good belly band to help support back and ease pain. Any suggestions? Also, what kind of orthodics did you use that helped with your lower back pain?

Not sure what I did, but past 5 days my lower back has been hurting and as a result my surrounding muscles are tightening up. It feels different than my usual back pain. Not sure what caused it, but I'm taking a break from my PT and doing minimal stretching. Thoughts? Thanks!!

Hi there,
The orthotics I have were made for my feet by my podiatrist but in your case if seeing a podiatrist is not reasonable maybe you could try some over the counter ones to see if that helps you at all.

Does ice rotated with heat give you any relief? That's all I know to suggest along with resting but not too much. Sounds like you are making good decisions on that. Once again there are just no definite answers for us. Trial and error, then try again seems to be what we have to do.

I'm 11 months out from my cervical surgery. I still get discouraged because the recovery is so slow but I am thankful that I feel better than I did a year ago. I hope you also can see some improvement and feel well enough to 'enjoy' your pregnancy and make some good memories. How old is your other child?

Sense? Kinda feel today that the pain is moving around to other side of lower back. Still taking a break from PT and taking it easy. Hopefully, this was just a bad week. Did you feel much of a difference from how you felt at 9 months versus how you feel now?

Yes I do feel better. Friends say I act more comfortable. I think that says a lot. I really got tired of people asking when I would get over my stiff neck. I don't hear that much now. It doesn't really move more but I'm more comfortable. Hope you get there soon.

I have no idea but that sounds reasonable to me.

Her birthday is Sunday so we are celebrating then and also having her party after thanksgiving. There is much to me thankful for!!

Having a rough day. I've been trying to take it easy and felt I was getting a little better, then woke up today and feel I took a step back. Trying not to get frustrated, but it's hard. Don't understand. Should I start doing some PT again? I'm confused on what I should do. Some of it feels muscular, but most of it feels skeletal. Wisdom?
