Dry Needling for neck pain & migraines

So I'm on another adventure (yet again,...I know, I know!)

My PT has been doing dry needling on me (left trap and both sub-occipital regions) for 2 weeks now. Daaaaanng, I get a mother of a migraine after (which he told me today is not uncommon when working in these areas).

It's a pretty neat experience (sans the migraine though)...will be interesting to see how this progresses.

Timing kind of blows, though, because I'm delving into some nasty stuff from my past in therapy and sure 'nuff, that's contributing to these headaches too.

One thing's for sure,....when I go for it, I sure manage to go all out!

The PT sticks these long and very fine needles into various points in your body...some are trigger points, some are not. It's similar to acupuncture except the needles go deeper.

It feels good while it's being done....

It's called "dry needling" because nothing is being injected into the body but the needle is inserted then periodically darted (twisted and pumped) into the point at intervals.

I've only had 2 sessions by my PT so I'm still a total noob on this. And, we're going slow....

I've got multiple issues contributing to my migraines, so I think it's going to take a multi-pronged approach.

It's fascinating though....used often for spastic muscles.

I wanted to throw something else out there for people to try who maybe never heard of it.....there's always something new! :)

I had such awful pain from acupuncture that I won't ever let anyone stick me with those needles again.

I'm starting to get headaches or maybe migraines again from my neck. Meds haven't worked very well for them.

Physical therapy maneuvers like nerve glides has helped some for arm pain. It doesn't work for neck pain. For just cramping or spasming muscles in my back TENS works as well as anything. It doesn't work for biceps or shoulder or neck pain.

i have arthritis in neck and shoulders and my muscles are seized. could this be useful? will ask my doc. thx for sharing merrida. and to you all.

I know this is old thread. But, did the dry needling work? My daughter has had a migraine for the last 53 days and we just started it yesterday. OMG....she got the mother of all headaches last night and tonight afterward as well. How long before you break the cycle and feel relief? Im hoping it will be soon. 53 days is way too long for anything!!!!

This is an older thread & we do like to keep them off of the main page. PJess has your daughter by chance tried Botox for her migraines. We hear a lot of people say positive things about Botox & migraines.
