First visit for me. Bringing my wife, she requested to go. She wants to say how concerned she is and how pain effects our life.

I am just wondering what to expect.

Your first visit is usually lots of questions about your pain. History of tests, MRI, xrays,discuss what kinds of things you do now for your pain and things youhave done in the past. Sign a contract and do labs and some do these first visit some don't.

Those are about the basics.

There is also a chance no pain meds will be given on the first visit, Some drs require a UA before rxing meds. I hope you have one that is good for you, let us know.

I have no problem with no meds. I. Understand it's first visit.in was just curious.

It depends on the dr. But, be sure & ask for a copy of the Pain Contract after you've signed it to take home. When things come up it is always good to be able to go and take it out and read it so you can be sure of exactly what it says. Even though you read it before you sign it, there is little doubt that in 1 or 2 months you will not remember exactly everything it says.

You probably can take it home as long as they are not writing meds yet but they are not very likely to write until you have signed. Most are pretty cut and dried, and similar explaining your responsibility to him and his to you.

If they do offer to give me meds that are time release I will sign contract after reviewing. If no time release I will review contract at home.

One more thing most contacts require you to use one and only one pharmacy so make sure you have the pharmacy info on hand, name, address, phone number. If ever my regular pharmacy is out and I have to go to another I call and tell them even if it is just a different location of the same pharmacy. Some drs are more lenient then others with this but I always play safe.

Appointment moved to Oct. 2nd. Had to many conflicting things going on and had to move something. I was able to get in on the 2nd so I moved the easiest.

Funny thing is, I am seeing a doctor who I saw at my spine surgeon. He is a pain specialist, and did injections for them. Now he is at the pain clinic I am going to, so nice thing is it is someone I know and who has seen me.

Hey SyXx...Does your potential new PM do injections only or does he integrate pain meds?  Mine does both, but is aware of my past series of injections (cervical and lumbar) at varying time periods.  He told me on my first visit that if injections had been ineffective thus far, there was no need to try those again.

My first visit was I thought, prayers answered.  We talked extensively, though there is certainly a language barrier in my case.  I had provided volumes of medical history w/films on discs.  He knew of my mal absorption issues with oral meds.  He wanted to start Fentanyl day one.  I just couldn't go there until I trust him enough to see it through. He told me "As long as there's God, there's hope".  He promised he would try to help my spinal/joint pain, but "not pelvic pain".

My advice would be to provide all pertinent records and make/take notes.  You'll have to choose one of those silly faces on the pain chart, which doesn't give you the option of "painfully homicidal".  Having your wife there will be a good thing.  I insisted that I go alone for my first 5 appointments. (mistake, but I am pathologically independent) My PM went bat crap crazy on me in May, so my husband was "non-negotiable" to be my wing man for my 6th appointment in August.  My PM was calmer than a soft breeze...

He does both, injections and pain meds. He will have access to all my medical records.

I want my wife to go. Pain does not just make it difficult on me, it puts my wife in the position to have to deal with an irritable husband who can barely move around. We had family over yesterday, after 30 minutes I had to go lay in bed.

I feel bad for her, she did plan on marrying someone who would be so worn down by 33. I guess I did alot of this to myself. Manual labor for all those years, lifting to much weight, roofing, crawling under houses.

I just want to be able to have a somewhat pain free day, I know it will not be totally gone but if it was down to a 3 or a 4 most days I would be happy. I always sit at a 5, and it goes up to a 6.5 to 7. I told myself 8,9 and 10 our reserved. After having surgery I know what a 8,9 or 10 is.

Best of luck to you, Sean. Please let us know how it goes. And I know exactly what you're talking about wanting a "somewhat" pain free day. Usually when I have changed meds it works wonders for a week or so. I savor that week like you wouldn't believe!

One thing I like about my PM doc is that he encourages regular communication between him and my other specialists. He doesn't say he doesn't have the time to talk to them, which gives me confidence in how my care is handled. I'd go with a list of questions you have for him, like you would to any appointment, and start keeping a pain log/journal now if you don't already so you have as much information as possible when you go to your appointment.
