Here's the thing with Bankart, the success rate falls greatly once your out of your teens early 20s with contributing factors such as how many dislocations have occurred, the extent of bone wear from recurring dislocating and how dedicated you are to PT post procedure. Naturally young athletes fare better given they have a lot on the line, are use to rigorous exercise regiments and are in excellent physical condition. From everything I know it is that PT program that is a deciding factor in how well you fare on the success scale. It's long and extensive and not pleasant by any means.
Recovery can be well over the 7 month mark and this is for those young healthy athletes. It is however the only option, surgical intervention, that you have to possibly make a difference. The longer and more often the dislocations occur the more bone erosion and normal wear take place decreasing the chances surgery will be any help at all. So in saying it's now or never.
Not sure what kind of Ortho your seeing but if it were me Sport Med would be my way to go. These guys get tons of experience, work with some of the most horrific damage and that experience is invaluable when considering who I want at my back with that scope.
I hope that helps some and good luck in your decision.
