My husband thinks my hip surgery is going to be piece of cake...

My husband doesn't realize how much pain or how constants my pain is...even though I try to explain it to him her doesn't know how to relate to it. He also thinks my surgery and recovery will be cake..and I'll be baking cakes in a week...no, but really is he right? Am I just going to breeze through this and not require alot of help? I'm scared out of my mind of having this surgery and anxiety just gets worse everyday. I'm going to miss my babies when I'm in the hospital.

Hi Laurabelle. I'm not sure what sort of hip surgery you're having, but recovery time will vary.

In my case, I had surgery in 2007 and though the surgeon said I would be able to drive in about a week, it took more like 3 months. Fortunately, I work at home mostly, but had to have someone drive me when needed. I wasn't even able to move my foot from the gas to brake.

By contrast, a colleague had a similar hip surgery about 2 years ago and he only needed a few weeks to recover. The difference was that in my case, the surgeon pulled my hip from the socket and so my muscles took a long time to recover. In his case, they didn't do that and so he recovered more quickly.

Laura, a friend of mine had a hip replacement last year & she was back teaching school in 6 weeks. Everyone is different on how they heal. A lot depends on your overall physical condition at the time of surgery. I would not worry over how your husband is reacting simply because he is probably scared too & does not want to show it. He is probably putting this brave face on for your benefit.

I wrote on your other thread if you are getting a 2nd opinion you best be calling today to get an appt with who you want. You said you need to do this before the end of the year & we have so many holidays coming up so it may be a tight schedule for these drs. I would not be wasting any time.

Keep in mind any time it comes to surgery, having a good surgeon with knowledge & great hands is a must. Surgeons as a rule do not have a good bedside manner. The good bedside manner only goes so far & thats it. I would rather have good hands working on me.
