I developed delayed gastric emptying from taking a PPI (omeprazole 20mg). I know it was the medication that caused the problem, since I did not have a virus or surgery. The PPI was the only medication I was taking.

Symptoms of delayed gastric emptying can include: abdominal fullness, burping, bloating, GERD/LPR, abdominal distention, weight loss, malabsorption of nutrients, stomach pain, nausea, and in worse cases vomiting.

The delayed gastric emptying started to reverse itself once off the medication, but I had to go through three months of horrible acid rebound to get off this medication. I have documented my journey overcoming delayed gastric emptying and included articles and studies on the connection between PPIs & delayed gastric emptying. I have posted this link below:

Hi CAGU...

Sorry to hear that you too deal with gastroparesis (I'm finally getting back & maintaining an acceptable weight after a long time fighting...at my worst my weight bottomed out at less than 30kg & was on the verge of multi organ failure from incredibly severe malnutrition).

I'm glad you found an answer and some improvement...but I would also say that it's dangerous to generalise. Studies on links between PPIs and gastric motility have come up with everything from it having no effect, through to having quite serious impact - and while I can accept and appreciate the reasoning why a PPI might cause issues in people with an otherwise "normal" GI tract - I would also say from hard earned personal experience (multiple & very painful episodes of gastritis when I DON'T take the med...in my case pantoprazole rather than omeprazole) that for many of us it can be a necessary evil.

For each one of us we need to consider things with our doctors on an individual patient basis, weigh potential benefits and risks and go from there.

Just my two cents worth...

The studies on PPIs & delayed gastric emptying did NOT show that everyone taking a PPI would develop delayed gastric emptying. However, it did show a certain percentage of people could. I was one of the unlucky ones.

I wasn't disagreeing with you or doubting you :) But have also seen too many instances of people being scared off meds that may be useful to them because of the few - like yourself with the PPI - have major adverse effects.
