I'm trying to find some info on something and haven't been successful. I know how knowledge the members here are and I thought someone might know where I could find what I'm looking for.

Is there any connection between the color of the walls in someones bedroom and their blood pressure ? Someone who has always had 120/80 bp, no cardio vascular problems, good labs, less stress now that in the past few yrs suddenly has high blood pressure for the past several months. The only thing different is that they moved and their bedroom was painted red. They are disabled and spend almost all of their time in their bedroom, age is 60.

Has anyone heard of anything like this ? I know that there are certain colors they recommend painting your bedroom and red is not one of them. But, I haven't been able to find anything from a medical prespective. Although if I was looking for decorating advice, I would have more than enough info. . LOL

Doing a quick google search, (which I'm sure you did, lol) gave me this ...... It's hard to say if it does or not, but perhaps painting it a calmer shade will help.

AngelLisa, Thanks. The only time the bp is taken is at the drs office. Not sure if the increases would remain after being out of the room for 1-2 hrs.

Ya I'm not sure, you would think it would go down after being out of the room for a couple hours but it's hard to say. Perhaps the Dr would know?

That's just it, the drs have no clue. The only thing that has been different in recent months is the red bedroom. For the record, they are renting and the bedroom was that color when they moved in. They have thought about repainting it, but they would have to pay someone to do and that won't be possible for 6 months or more.

I think mine would go up in a red room. I hate the color so much for walls! A splash of red, maybe a chair would be fine.

On a quick search I found several studies, or reports of studies, saying blood pressure in a red room would rise.

Paint the room blue or green to lower blood pressure, so say the studies. It's awfully hard to paint over red or black. Even if you use a primer to prepare the walls and use a primer-containing paint, it'll take 2 or three coats of your color.

Always keep ceilings white, or if you must, white with just a touch of the room's color. Light ceilings reflect more light.

some prisons use pink as a forum of a calming influence, less aggression. i am into colour, esp as a form of therapy.

I don't know,but I can see that happening.Red is definitely not a relaxing color and I don't think I've ever seen a Red bedroom.

Mine is an Olive Green.Very dull.Not bright.

Curiously, red bowls, cups, utensils are shown to improve appetite in debilitated patients. It is believed it is because it is such a stimulating color. Feng Shui might be a helpful resource. I've tried some of the suggestions from that system and found them helpful. If your friend can't repaint the room yet, try placing a picture with calming colors in the primary sight line from the bed. Calm colors for the bedding and curtains may help tone it down too. If they can't afford brand new, check thrift shops and ask around among friends. Many people have extra sets they aren't using. Let us know how it goes.

Speaking of bedding and sheets, can you hang white or light colored sheets to cover the walls? It could possibly be less expensive than dealing with the multiple coats of paint needed to cover red.
