I have COPD and asthma. I am subject to chest infections after colds. The coughs are awful and have a continued hacking cough that lasts for minutes at a time. Also July 2014 I suffered a chest infection that left me with a cough(now for 10 months). The latest chest infection has made this cough worse. Have informed COPD nurse at GP surgery but nothing done but heart Xray. I now have pain under my right rib cage and finding difficult to sit up. I had a spit test in February and they could not find any infection at that time. Do I contact Doctor for antibiotics, take painkillers or present myself to A&E for an Xray.

Hello & welcome to the chronic pain forum. I too have COPD, however, I am under the care of a pulmonary dr for treatment. Do you have a pulmonary dr that takes care of you that you can get in to see? If seeing your primary care dr would be quicker perhaps you can get in with him/her. I think your best bet is to schedule an appt & not try to go through a nurse for help especially since this has been going on this long. It sounds like you have probably pulled ribs from coughing so much & I know how painful that can be, or it could be something else, best to be checked.

I too have lung disease.

You need a chest X-ray. That will give you enough info to move forward.

After getting the flu shot a few years ago, I became extremely ill. I developed a cough that would NOT stop. I went back to the doctor that gave me the flu shot, he nastily said "You have copd" jabbed me with a needle (steroids, excruciatingly painful) and told the 'nurse' to take me in the back for a nebulizer treatment. I was left all alone, crying from pain and fear, with this mask on my face!

Obviously, I no longer see that doctor, but the steroid injection and nebulizer treatment stopped the cough. I hope you get the answer you need!

Welcome to the forum and another COPD sufferer here and I know exactly what your saying and every germ I manage to pick up goes straight to my lungs and I am set to cough nonstop for weeks and sometimes months even. I had the flu a few months back and went into pneumonia of course and coughed so hard I busted blood vessels in my eyes. I might add here that I have taken every cough med otc and prescribed and nothing not one of them makes a dent the amount or depths of my coughing jags.

Its possible you could have turned into pneumonia,as Susie said damaged a rib,gotten pleurisy,or any number of things but it certainly needs attention and also as Susie suggested you need a Pulmonary Doc onboard as they are the go to for lung issues and GPs are great for maintaining a healthy status but you need a specialist when things are not going well. Also I use nebulizer treatments at home when my COPD is causing me issues and it is the only thing that helps cut down on the cough and shortness issues.

You have been given some pretty good suggestions and I certainly would start with pulmonary appointment but due to the specialty it could take a bit to get an appointment and if you have to have a referral you will need to see your GP anyway but certainly ask for that. By all means if you think or feel like this warrants immediate attention then I would visit the ER,you know your body best. A chest xray can at least rule out anything risky and give you some peace of mind.
