I've had a few rounds of cortisone shots, starting when I was 16. I've got arthritis in all joints but the injections have focused on my lumbar area, wrists, and knees. They never gave me pain relief but did help a bit with swelling.

The last few times I've had a reaction. I get super sweaty (ac set to 60 with fan going and I still sweat through my clothes), a headache, minor nausea, feels like my heart is going to beat out of my chest.

Anyone else get this? My pm said he wouldn't do them anymore because of my reactions. Any ideas that may help until I get in with the surgeon on the 24?

Some of your side effects are pretty typical from steroids such as the sweating & & the heartbeat thing. I call it the love hate relationship, love what relief a steroid can bring but hate the SE's from them.

The sweating, while making me feel gross, doesn't worry me so much. They cause my heart rate to jump and my blood pressure goes crazy, too. Ive passed out once.

At least my kids think its funny that I'm so sweaty. Lol! My grandmother keeps saying that I'm probably going through the "change". So I'm glad to hear its a normal reaction. I'm not ready for menopause yet! Lol

Sounds like the steroids to me, too.
Definitely a love/hate drug. I've been on them nonstop for over a decade. 50mg and higher made me look like I was just out of a shower-all red faced and drippy.

But-there's a reason why we love it. I hope it gives you the relief you need.

If you were not getting any relief for your pain your doctor was right to discontinue. I have been having the same shots for the last two years and they do assist me to be able to be active a little longer than without and decrease pain by about 30 percent. My pain management physician is going to try radiofrequency ablation on my lower lumbar and sciatic areas to see if this gains more pain relief. I will let you know how that goes.

If they weren't helping, it sounds like discontinuing was the best option. If they were helping, but causing side effects, I would have suggested that you see if your doc could just do the local anesthetic to ensure they would be helpful & then maybe try an RF (assuming the shots made a significant difference). Since they weren't helping anyways, perhaps a different route would be better -- topical numbing cream, centrally-acting pain meds, ice/rest, massage, acupuncture, etc.
