How do I deal with Pain due to an accident

Hi Everyone,

In early Feb. of 2015 I was involved in a car accident that caused wipe lash. I've seen I don't know how many doctors and each on said something different. I've had x-rays, Mri, injections of every kind(epidural - blocks). I've been in so much pain I can't sleep through the night. I wore a soft collar for better part of 2 months. was at PT for almost 3 months no help. I was sent back to my family doctor by Orthopedic Spine Specialist. My family doctor sent me to Orthopedic Institute of Pa. They took another x-ray and found that my neck is now straight and is a concern. I'm being sent for another Mri. I don't want to be on Pills for the rest of my life. I'm already up to 5-6 in the morning and in the evening. What can I do or should I do.

Hello & welcome to Healing Well. Sorry to hear about what you are dealing with. Whiplash injuries can be very difficult to deal with as you are finding out.

I am not sure what your MRI reports say, that would help if you have that info. Number 2, for a neck injury I would suggest seeing a board certified neurosurgeon. Many of us here feel a neurosurgeon is the best you can get when it involves the spine. They have more training dealing with the nerves in these areas than an orthopedic. An orthopedic is more into the bony structure. I am not a dr by any means, none of us are drs here.

Now, when you say you take 5-6 in the morning & in the evening, are you talking about prescription pain medication or what? Are you on a muscle relaxer? Have you tried a Tens Unit, or had any hydrotherapy. Getting in a heated pool can be an excellent form of treatment. Has any of the drs said you have a pinched nerve?

Have you or are you under the care of a pain mgt specialist? Treating pain is their specialty & most of us in this forum are the care of one. You wouldn't go to the dentist for a broken arm.

If you can provide a little more detail, only if you are comfortable in doing so, perhaps we can give some suggestions. But again, we are not drs here, just folks with a lot of experience dealing with pain.

I also have a straightened neck with no curve to it, but it could've been something you were born with, but the auto accident made worse...a neuro told me two years ago that I could have a neck fusion with all the bells and whistles of hardware ; I said no, this was from the top neurosurgeon in Houston...if they tell you that you need surgury then get a second opinion and find the best neurosurgeon in your area for this second opinion and if needed get a third opinion. Don't rush into surgery...Have you tried physical therapy with ultra sound and very light stretching, pt with ultra sound threatments give me relief that last for almost a year, but to me that's better than getting surgery and I'm functional on my meds...a muscle relaxaer also helps, but I only take the muscle relaxer at night...whatever you do you need to get possible counselling on how much pain meds your currently taking as it sounds like to much and I agree with straydog on that we need more info as t better help you out...also stay away from chiropractors until they can pinpoint what is causing your pain and get copies of these up coming mri's...hope your doing better soon, keep hope, ...
