Hi Pitmom,
Ouch. I used to get shin splints all the time when I ran, so I feel your pain.
I found that getting new sneakers, and using a good quality insert in the sneakers made a huge difference. I've even been using the same sneakers for several years now -- a big no-no, I know, but sneakers are just too darn expensive to replace every 6 mo, like you are supposed to. I have tried to dedicate one pair of sneakers to walking/running, though, rather than wearing them as every-day shoes, so that they last for longer. So far, it seems to have worked. I can't say that I run much any more, but when I do, still no problems.

PS - Congrats on the granddaughter! That's super exciting!
