The best resource for information on TMJ disorders, hands-down, is:
www.tmj.org
It is a 501-C, non-profit organization here in the United States.
Care for TMJ disorders can be difficult to find coverage for, as most procedures (ex. disc replacement) and mouth splinting have not been found to be sufficiently clinically beneficial to mandate coverage.
Most medical insurance plans specifically exclude TMJ coverage.
TMJ.org has a clinical resource locating service. They can help you locate an oral-maxilary specialist.
I contacted TMJ.org early in my diagnosis and found the organization to be a treasure-trove of information. They have an excellent pamphlet that explains available treatment options - benefits and risks. If you have TMJ problems, TMJ.org is the organization to turn to for support and advice.
I have fairly advanced joint damage due to avascular necrosis of both my hips and left jaw. I saw an oral-maxillary specialist who recommended an intricate mouth splint - cost $8,000 not including follow-up visits and modifications to the splint. I decline and went to another dental specialist and was fitted with a custom-made mouth splint (cost $500) which has provided me with good relief of symptoms.
Bottom Line: Take time to gather full information on your options for treatment, full due diligence. There is a lot of "quackery" in offerings for TMJ. Be careful not to be taken advantage of.
